Convention Use Develop Challenge

Comment

Masthead Keeping with a rather typical font for a magazine (bold, easily read and black) the masthead doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.

The magazine has started to develop the use of the masthead because it has taken the conventional position but tried to challenge the typical conventions of a student magazine. The use of this font type suggests an art deco that links to the overall theme of an artistic style of student magazine.

Cover Lines The cover lines have been placed in a unique way that isn’t typical for a magazine.

There are very few cover lines, and those that are there are difficult to read because of the colouring and way that they have been positioned.

Main Image While the main image is artsy, it does not relate to the content.

The main image is interesting and artistic, but has little to do with the actual theme of the magazine.

Main Cover line There does not seem to be a main cover line, which is a let down for the cover.

I do not see a main cover line, although perhaps the creator meant for ‘beautiful world’ to be theirs, if that is true then it is not clear and is also irrelevant.

Typography (Font) The font is professional and pleasing to the eye. It is a normal type of magazine font that works well.

The font used is aesthetically pleasing, and also professional looking, however the black colour used against the black and white background makes it so the font doesn’t particularly stand out and is therefore not very eye catching.

Position The positioning challenges the usual conventions of a magazine.

The positioning (particularly of the text) is interesting, but again, not that eye catching. The composition of the main shot could be a lot better.

Barcode the barcode is placed where it would be in a real magazine.

changed the colour theme from the typical black barcode.

Although they have made the barcode look unique to other magazines, this actually takes away the realism from it as it does not look authentic.

why?● Who would be the audience for your media product?● How did you attract/address your audience?

Activity:

Use two slides to answer these questions. Make it interesting. You may want to crop your image to include some detailed analysis.

Example of cropping an image so that you can talk about this further.

Magazine EvaluationRelevant masthead with aesthetically pleasing, albeit not particularly traditional magazine style, font.

Multiple cover lines, that discuss what is going on in the school as well as having eye catching headers. (Also designed in the schools colours so that it has that extra link to the school).

Use of a real barcode helps the magazine look more authentic.

Main image is, again, relevant to what the magazine is about (the school) and therefore is a picture of someone writing on what appears to be a test paper.

use of school logo to bring in that link to the school.

Text is relatively well positioned, and the photo leaves room for the text to be placed around it.

Magazine Evaluation How does this magazine use, develop or change usual conventions of a real media piece?

With this magazine, I tried to make it look as authentically like a real magazine as possible. Using a barcode, as well as the typical layout for such magazines and a catchy masthead. I believe this magazine definitely achieves it’s goal of looking like it could potentially be a real magazine within this school.

How does your media topic represent certain social groups?

This magazine, of course, represents the students in this institution, and what they may want to see within a real magazine in their school. I think that it appeals widely to almost all social groups that may exist within the school itself as it isn’t specifically for one certain group of people.

What media institution may distribute your media product & why?

It’s doubtful that a large institution would distribute a local school magazine, however, any within the vicinity of the school area may be more willing to as it is a part of their local community and therefore has a link to why they may want to distribute it. It would also make it easier to then be able to get the product to the people that it is marketed for (as it would be coming from a nearby institution rather than a long way away).

Who would be the audience?

Students that are at the school would be the target audience for this magazine, as well as potentially teachers and the guardians of those students who attend.

How did you attract that audience?

When looking at this magazine cover, it is very clearly targeted towards students at a school (in this case, Newhaven - hence the masthead for the paper). With a picture of exam papers and eye catching cover lines such as ‘what’s really going into your school dinners?’ I feel as if students at this establishment would certainly be drawn to the magazine.
