How to watch online video materials?
• Download: The file is saved in its entirety on the hard disk of your PC before you can watch it.
• Progressive download: the data are saved on the hard disk of the PC (like download) but you can watch the fragments that have already been downloaded before the entire file has been downloaded.
• Streaming

What is streaming?
• The requested media file is located at a streaming server from which it is sent to a buffer on your PC. As soon as there are enough bytes loaded in the buffer, the video starts to play. Nothing is permanently saved on your PC. The entire file stays at the streaming server

Streaming media: steps
1. The user -> Internet2. User requests media file3. Streaming server prepares for transmission4. Streaming server sends the first fragments of the media file5. Streaming client on your PC saves the first incoming
fragments on the buffer memory of your PC6. De buffer is loaded until enough fragments have reached
the streaming client7. Streaming client starts to play while the server continues
the send new fragments of the file to the buffer

Advantages
• For the user:– No long waiting times download– Less space on harddisk download, progressive download – Random access, can go forward and backwards– Access independent of location through internet connection
• For the provider:– No adaptatio/editing of media possible: video located external to
viewer (progressive) download (IPR issues)– Tracking: who, what, when, references
• For educators and learners:– Integration in webpage and synchronisation with other supporting
materials: links, documentation, other mediafiles, pictures, chat, forum, all in the same environment

Integration - Synchronisation
• Nelson (1987): “ The trouble with interactive media is that they all tend to be closed objects that can’t be combined or viewed toghether (whereas books can quote eachother and lie open on the same desk)”

Students produce their own materials
• Thanks to an easy production process in comparison to traditional video, webcam
• Student plays active role as “creator”• Learning process is central rather than the
final product • Especially suitable for group assignments• Example: student school radio• Publication at video.google.com / YouTube
