Helping children to become fit when they are young provides them with the invaluable gift of healthy living. To bring fitness into a child’s life more successfully, follow these guidelines:
• Make it fun. Dancing, playing on playgrounds, playing sports, chasing each other, and jumping rope are all great fitness activities—and fun for children. To establish that staying fit is enjoyable, introduce children to fun ways to be active.
• Get involved. Lead the fitness charge by example, actively participating in the activities and games that you introduce to your children.
• Let your child guide you. Some kids will want to play sports and others will not. Allow their interests to dictate which activities you choose; remember that even reading and video games can be active when you walk or bike to the library to pick them up.
• Stay positive. Reinforce the benefits of fitness and reward your child for activity.
