The Reason Behind for selecting The Cotton T-Shirt

Page 4: Story of a cotton T-shirt

The Reason Behind for selecting The Cotton T-Shirt• A cotton T-shirt requires 2700 liters

of water which is enough for one person to drink for 900 days.

• It takes lots of energy to grow, manufacture, transport & mostly ,it needs energy to care for it.

• One load of drying uses 5x more energy than washing.

• One load of washing uses 40 gallons of water.

Page 5: Story of a cotton T-shirt

The Reason Behind for selecting The Cotton T-Shirt• Now think how often you wash &

dry your cotton t-shirt?• Don’t we have plenty of resources?

Plenty of water? Yes but,97% of water is salty .nearly 2% is locked in snow or in ice .That leaves less than 1% water that we can access.

• Now think yourself how many t-shirt in your closet , city, Country or are on the planet ?

Sustainability Issues for Harvesting cotton• Unsustainable Use of Water.• Unsustainable use of Cultivated land.• Unsafe use of agricultural chemicals has severe health

impacts on workers in the field and on ecosystems that receive excess doses that run-off from farms.

• Lack of rest time.• Unsustainable cotton farming, with massive inputs of water

and pesticides, has already been responsible for the destruction of large-scale ecosystems such as the Aral Sea in central Asia and the deteriorating health and livelihoods of people living there.

• Many small farmers in the South fall ill or die due to a lack of adequate equipment and knowledge about how to handle pesticides properly.

• However, a farmer’s income from his cotton harvest is often lower than the cost of the inputs due to low crop yields and market prices, driving more and more farmers into debt.

Page 9: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Spinning & Knitting• The spinning, weaving and

knitting stages use a lot of energy ( loss of huge energy).

• Produce solid waste and generate huge dust and noise.

• Also involve the use of lubricants and oils to strengthen and protect the fibers from the stresses of processing which cause our Operator’s health risks.

Page 10: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Manufacturing Process• Safety Issues.• Most of the machineries cause

noise, sound and air pollution.• Over-usage of natural resources

like plants, water, etc depletes or disturbs ecological balance.

• Sometimes machine cause the reduction of the quality of the product which cause economical loss.

• Fatal Working disease.• Wages and salaries issues.

Page 11: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Dyeing• An estimated 17% to 20% of industrial

water pollution comes from textile dyeing along with environmental pollution.

• Dyeing alone can account for most of the water used in producing a garment; unfixed dye then often washes out of garments, and can end up coloring the rivers, as treatment plants fail to remove them from the water. Dye fixatives – often heavy metals – also end up in sewers and then rivers .

• Very much injurious to health.• Not Cost effective.

Sustainability Issues for Washing

• Enzymes, bleaches, perfumes and colorants used in chemical detergents are absorbed into our bodies when they come into contact with our skin. Some of these toxic chemicals have even been linked to cancer, allergies and birth defects.

• Furthermore, when washing clothes, 90% of energy used goes to heating the water.

• Washing a 5 kg load of laundry every two days creates nearly 440 kg of carbon dioxide emissions in a year.

• Washing using a top loading machine, at 13500 gallons of water per year.

Page 13: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Labeling and finishing

• Chemicals used for finishing contain, amongst many others, heavy metals like copper, chromium and cobalt which are known hormone disrupters, and formaldehyde, a chemical.

• Formaldehydes are used in wrinkle-free, non iron finishing but also as a fixing agent for cotton. It is an irritant to the skin and also a hormone disrupter.

• Produced huge wastes in finishing section which cause economical loss

• Finishing agent is harmful for the environment as well as the product

• Finishing is the chief cause of environmental impacts in the production phase, using significant quantities of water, energy and chemicals and producing substantial amounts of effluence.

Page 14: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Transportation

• Air pollution.• Noise pollution.• Cause of Global Warming.• 15% of global Carbon dioxide emission are attributed to the transport sector.• The environmental impact of shipping includes greenhouse gas emissions,

acoustic, and oil pollution.• It could take weeks and hundreds of workers to load / unload a ship

Page 15: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Packaging• Packaging takes a lot of energy, water and

other natural resources to produce.• Packaging waste pollutes our air, water and

soil. In fact, 1.9 million tones of packaging waste produces the same amount of greenhouse gas as 860,000 cars. The litter it creates also ends up in many places that it shouldn’t - blocking our storm water drains and causing serious problems for our regular life.

• Not all the energy used to create packaging can be recovered by recycling.

• Negative health Effect.• Diverting solid waste.

Page 16: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Marketing

• The Dirty Side of the marketing on Environment and Society exposes how clever marketing tactics designed to increase demand skillfully hide this reality.

• Creating Illusions.• Misguide the targeted audience.• The excessive costs of a product

caused by marketing.• Misrepresentation• Bad marketing is disturbing the

fundamentals of communication and thus sales factor.

Page 17: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Retail store

• Lack of Oversight.• Geographic Complications.• Additional Costs.• Additional Considerations.• Huge waste of Energy.• Customer Service.• Dissatisfaction.

Page 18: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Consumers• Pricing Issues.• Risk and fundamental product characteristics.• Stakeholders less commitment to society and

environment.• Look for companies who practice Fair Trade,

which means providing fair wages to local workers and treating them with dignity and respect, in a safe, healthy workplace.

• Avoid any garment that is advertised as being anti-shrink, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antistatic, anti-odor, anti-flame, anti-wrinkle, or anti-stain. These all contain chemicals not tested for safety on humans.

Page 19: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Recycling• Recycling cotton clothes isn’t simple

• Chopping-up process during recycling tends to lower the cotton’s quality .

• Debris from the activity of collecting and sorting the recycling can contain hazardous chemicals and be dangerous to recycling workers. You can reduce this negative effect of recycling by carefully sorting your recyclables and making sure not to include dangerous items.

Page 20: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Sustainability Issues for Disposal

• Pollution from wasted energy and occupied landfill space.• Incineration.• Water treatment.• Products that are not biodegradable or are slow to decompose

can remain in landfill sites for centuries, often emitting gases that could be harmful to the environment.

Strategy for sustainable water Solution

Water Resources are limited and we need to handle them reasonably and responsibly. The environmental impact of textile production is considerable due to the vast quantity of water required and the variety of chemicals used that generates waste. Therefore, Water consumption Should be reduced in textile. As we know 700gallons of water is required to produce a single cotton t-shirt , that why the sustainable of water are given below-

• Provide affordable water supplies to poor communities by building on local experience and skills.

• Increases availability of potable water and reducing water cost by purifying wastewater for industry and irrigation.

Page 24: Story of a cotton T-shirt

Strategy for sustainable water Solution• Eco-efficient Solutions : After-soaping agent

for reactive- dyed cellulose fibers. Compared to the conventional process, it considerably shortens the processing time, saving both water and energy.

• Reduced chemical used which caused water harm.

• To optimize water resource management and increase desalination and water reuse.

• Awareness create• Conscious production.• Technological Development.
