DESCRIPTION

Students In Action is a national youth volunteer leadership, recognition and reward program, designed to pass the tradition of service on to the next generation. Co-developed by Jefferson Awards for Public Service and Deloitte, it is now in over 250 High Schools.Each spring, Student Leaders from the participating schools compete in regional competitions. They are asked to report on the implementation of the program, and the impact they've had, both in their schools and within their communities.

The first Jefferson Awards were awarded in January and the ceremony occurs monthly

The first Jefferson Awards at Stevenson recognized the

efforts of three students who helped bring relief to Haiti

• Cause combined Amnesty International, Print Media Club, Interact Club, and Future Doctors of America

• Designed shirts to be sold at 100% profit• One day record-breaking bake sale

earning $800• Online donations through the school

Interact ClubService efforts that focus on community projects such as working with disabled adults, the local food pantry, Habitat For Humanity, Adopt-a-Highway, football game BBQs, and charity walks for various organizations.

Teen-AidersA non-profit organization that works in shelters, kitchens, and youth groups to help homeless kids. Volunteers coordinate activities and plan a fundraiser benefiting homeless kids in Lake County.

Students Helping SoldiersSupport for service members abroad through care packages, Paint-A-Thon, toy drives, bake sales, veteran clothing drives, and more.

Peer HelpersSupport for Stevenson Students through counseling and outreach programs. Events include Violence Prevention Week, AIDS awareness Week, and a Mental Health/Suicide Prevention program.

Best BuddiesStudents with disabilities are paired with students without disabilities. Outings and other activities create lasting friendships that enhance the lives of those involved.

•American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is held at Buffalo Grove and Stevenson High Schools every other year•Event Chairs and Committee members are from both schools•This year’s efforts have included a Kickoff event, Hoops for Hope basketball game, and the Great American Smokeout•Last year’s Relay

•Had 90 teams•Raised $85,723

•Every year, Stevenson expands its community reach and improves events for greater success

•Spirit Walk made the transition this year to Spirit Fest

•Give-a-Thon enhanced the leadership role of students in running the annual holiday drive

•Project Dance •Began in 2007: 300 participants, over $18,000•2008: 600 participants, over $32,000•2009: over 900 participants, over $50,000•2010: over 1300 participants, over $61,500 (final total including March Madness fundraiser)
