• What are educational standards?– Educational standards provide clear learning goals for

student in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, communication, the arts, educational technology, and health and fitness.

– Academic standards do not dictate how teachers should teach. Standards structure the learning experience with specific goals around which teachers can build effective lessons and learning activities. Standards are a first step — the building blocks — that provide young people a high-quality education, always pointing the way to success in college and work.

Why standards-based education?

• Standards-Based Education– originally arose out of a conviction that

expectations for student performance can and should be raised and that specific goals needed to be set if achievement is to be improved. It rests on the belief that all children should have access to more challenging curriculum content and that they should be expected to learn that content at a proficient-to-high level of performance.

Why do we need educational standards?

• As a roadmap for teachers, parents and students– Standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but they do

help teachers figure out the knowledge and skills their students should have so that teachers can build the best lessons and environments for their classrooms. Standards also help students and parents by setting clear and realistic goals for success. . . . Of course, standards are not the only thing that is needed for our children’s success, but they provide an accessible roadmap for our teachers, parents, and students.

• Kentucky Core Academic Standards - NEW– The Kentucky Core Academic Standards were recently

adopted by the Kentucky State Board of Education. Within the former Program of Studies, the English Language Arts standards and the mathematics standards are now represented by the new Common Core State Standards. These standards are currently moving through the regulatory process. The other content areas are still comprised by the Program of Studies revised in 2006.

• What are 21st Century Skills?– The broad thinking around 21st century learning

acknowledges the need for new “form and function” to be added to education goals. This thinking is informed by a belief that learning must leverage the affordances of new technologies, employ better pedagogies based on recent research on how people learn, and be cognizant of the characteristics of a new breed of learners.
