How are we going to organise the teaching of Literacy each week?

• 1 x 45 min lesson every day that focusses on the teaching of reading

• 1 x 45 minute lesson every day that focus on the teaching of writing

• 1x 30 minute session every day to allow you to listen to 1 Guided Reading group every day

• Same genre should be used for the Reading and Writing lesson for the 6-week block

How do we organise our Reading lessons

• Find a piece of text that is appropriate for the skills you will be teaching –some of the texts that you’re going to use for the writing session might be appropriate as the shared text in the reading lesson OR try to find texts that link to the genre but also link to the UOI for the term.

• Identify the skill / skills that you’ll be teaching – these should come from the RUBRIC.

• Share the LO and Success Criteria.

• Modelled Reading

• Shared Reading

• Independent Activity

• Plenary

• During the Independent Activity, teachers are expected to work with relevant students or group of student. Teacher should not be patrolling or sat at their desk doing something else

How do we organise our Writing lessons?

• ‘Explorations In Non-Fiction’

• Select the genre – start with non-fiction for the first 6 week unit

• Follow the format:

Extended Unit of Work for 10 sessions – working on developing 1 piece of text

Using the Power Write / ‘Taking It Forward’ or ideas linked to the UOI continue to develop students understanding of the genre working on at least 1 piece of writing per week

Teachers should continue to:

Think about the ‘hook’ – why should they want to write?

Share the LO and develop the Success Criteria

Allow the students (especially the more able) to use the ‘self-assessment criteria’ in the ‘Explorations In Non-Fiction’ book

Plenary

• During all Independent Activities, teachers are expected to work with relevant students or groups of student. Teachers should not be patrolling or sat at their desk doing something else
