INTRODUCTIONHistory of space

In 350 BC, Greek philosopher ‘Aristotle’ suggested that nature abhors a vacuum, a principle that became known as the ‘horror vacui’. The first professional astronomer to support the concept of an infinite universe was the Englishman Thomas Digges in 1576.In the 17th century, astronomers pointed a new device called the telescope at the heavens and made startling discoveries.

But the years since 1959 have amounted to a golden age of solar system exploration. The term outer space was first recorded by the English poet Lady Emmeline Stuart - Wortley in her poem "The Maiden of Moscow" in 1842.The shorter term space is actually older, first used to mean the region beyond Earth's sky in John Milton’s Paradise Lost in 1667.Outer space is the closest natural approximation of a perfect vacuum.

Outer spaceSpace is every thing in the universe that lies outside the earths atmosphere .At the distance between stars are unimaginableIt has no air to scatter the lightA more accurate definition of the term "space" would be the continuous extension in all directions in which all matter exists.

FIRST INDIAN WOMAN

Kalpana Chawla, was an Indian-American astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana, India.Chawla joined the NASA astronaut corps in March 1995

On January 16, 2003 Chawla finally returned to space aboard Columbia on the ill-fated STS-107 mission.Chawla traveled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth, logging more than 360 hours in space.Chawla earned a second Master of Science degree in 1986 and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

FACT ABOUT SPACE

Fact: If two pieces of metal touch in space, they become permanently stuck together This may sound unbelievable, but it is true. Two pieces of metal without any coating on them will form in to one piece in the vacuum of space.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) automated spacecraft for solar system exploration come in many shapes and sizes. Between 1959 and 1971, NASA spacecraft were dispatched to study the Moon and the solar environment; they also scanned the inner planets other than Earth -- Mercury, Venus and Mars.

Pros of Space Exploration

• Space exploration has the potential of discovering the yet undiscovered facts about space.

• It may bring about a dramatic change to our lives.

• Through the exploration of space, we may find new minerals, new precious materials.

Page 19: Space

Cons of Space Exploration

• One of the most important cons of space exploration is the money spent in the research.

• Manned missions to space impose a huge amount of risk on the astronauts who travel to space.

• Apart from the expenditure of money, a travel to space also risks the human life.
