Solving One-Step Equations
Addition & Subtraction Multiplication & Division
Recall: A variable is an unknown value usually represented by a letter.
Example 1: 5 + x = 24 Addition
Example 2: y - 18 = 47 Subtraction
Example 3: 9a = 72 Multiplication
Example 4: b ÷ 3 = 18 Division
The Goal is to Isolate the Variable
Use the Inverse operation to get the variable by itself.“opposite”
Inverses
Inverses
Addition
Subtract number to both sides of the equal sign.
-5 -5 x = 19
5 + x = 24
Check: 5 + 19 = 24 24 = 24
Subtraction
Add number to both sides of the equal sign.
+18 +18 y = 65
y - 18 = 47
Check: 65 + 18 = 47 47 = 47
Multiplication
Divide number from both sides of the equal sign.
÷9 ÷ 9 a = 8
9a = 72
Check: 9 × 8 = 72 72 = 72
Division
Multiply number to both sides of the equal sign.
×3 ×3 b = 54
b ÷ 3 = 18
Check: 54 ÷ 3 = 18 18 = 18
