What Is The NRS Social Grade?

The NRS Social Grade is an arrangement of demographic grouping or ranking primarily used within the United Kingdom. The original purpose of having this classification was to organise people into different categories which was created by the National Readership Survey however, this tool has been used by other institutions for market analysis. These categories are based on an individual’s profession. These grades can be categorised into ‘ABC1’ and ‘C2DE’ and this is to represent the middle class and working class. Within the UK, only 2% of the population are considered as upper class (the upper class isn’t categorised within these set of grades).

NRS Social Grade

In relation to my target audience: people from the ages of 4 years old to 18 years old, they would fall into the category of ‘D’ and ‘E’ as majority of the people wouldn’t be working and will have to rely on an external source of income such as parents or other family members (however this may not apply to those around or over the age of 18 as they may have an occupation). Along with this, my film is also aimed at those who are avid watchers of animations or those who work within the industry. Those who work within the animation industry are most likely to fall into the categories between: ‘C1’, ‘B’ and ‘A’ because they will have a secure income and are employed.
