Mesopotamia

In Mesopotamia they buried their dead, but they did not try to preserve the bodies.

Grave markers above ground were rare.

Cremation was also rare because that involved building a big fire in a place with not much wood, so it would cost a lot.

EgyptIn Egypt they believed that when someone died their spirit was permanently with the body. So they preserved the body.

In Egypt because of the sand, air, and climate the bodies could be preserved. They did this by burying the bodies shallow pits in the sand to dry.
