•The correct definition for ‘Emo’ is ‘Emotive Hardcore and is a sub genre of hardcore punk which originated in the 1980s. Later in the 1990s emo artists formed in the United states and influenced the music industry, as record labels then began to specialise in that style.

•Emo’s today are stereotyped as being depressed, alone and misunderstood by the world. They usually express their true emotions through poetry and music.

Hair- layered and dyed, preferably black with highlights, can vary form short cropped hair to straight, long hair,

Clothes- skinny jeans and black band T-Shirts as well as a few bright tops,

Shoes- black and white converses or Vans, you can customise them with neon laces, and finally …

Accessories- Hair Bows, Band Wrist bands and Head Bands in black and few colourful ones. Band Badges, rubber bracelets and studded bags and belts.

•Emos are also stereotyped for self harming them selves due to their depression.

Music Appreciation

Emo is a rock music genre, usually emo’s can rock along with a bass, guitar and a violin, sometimes they can turn their own poetry in to songs. Good examples of Emo Music are in the following:

•Hip Hop originated in the African American and Latino American communities of New York City during the late 1970s. •In the 1960s in the United Kingdom, Rockers were a term associated with motorcycle riding youths. In the 1960s Rockers were also called greasers or grease, an offensive term called by mods and skinheads.

•Rockers today are always misunderstood with emos when it comes to fashion and music, but they do have their own unique styles which differentiate their social groups.

•Rockers usually wear:

Shirts - Band T-Shirts or Striped T-Shirts,

Trousers - Baggy or Tight pants,

Jackets - Black leather Jacket, Plain Hoodies or Denim Jackets,

Hair Style – Different hair cuts ranging from long hair to short hair,

Accessories – Spiked or Studded Wristbands, pinned badges and black or patterned scarves.

•The Goth subculture first started in the United kingdom during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, which was a result of the post-punk genre. The Goth tribe has survived much longer compared to the other sub cultures belonging to that era, and has continued to evolve since then.

•The Goth tribe was influenced by gothic literature, horror films and was linked to the BDSM culture which is a role play of experiences of pain and tension.

•Gothic fashion is labelled as dark and moody, this is shown through their:

Clothes- black period styled clothing borrowed from the Elizabethan, Victorian, Medieval and Renaissance times which often express religious imagery such as crucifixes and ankhs,

Goths fashion is sometimes confused with Heavy Metal fashion.

•Grime is a genre of urban music which first materialised in East London in England during the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

•Grime is in fact a development of:

dance hall and

hip hop.

Clothes- bright coloured hoodies, bright sport jackets, baggy t-shirts with lettering, baggy jeans,

Hair- cut short or long, sometimes braided and usually put back,

Shoes- bright trainers and

Accessories- baseball cap, silver, gold and colourful jewellery e.g. rings, chains and bracelets.

•Many performers demonstrated their skills on the UK Pirate Radio, achieving underground success before becoming famous on the mainstream.

Pop lovers usually listen to:

•Pop first came about in the mid 1950s which was a softer form of rock n roll and rock music in general. It focused on targeting the youth market through relatively short and simple love songs. Even though pop still has the basic pop elements from the 50s, it has started to grasp influences from other forms of popular music, (for example, rock music), advancing and producing new variations on existing themes.

•When it comes to pop, there is a stereotype that pop is mainly very girly, targeting females more then males, examples of this is reflected through pop fashion:

Clothes- a lot of pinks and purples reflected through t-shirts, dresses and skirts, also has other bright colours such as blue, yellow and red,

Hair- the stereotype look is blonde but pop has now introduced brunettes as well as other hair colours, hair is also stereotyped as being long and wavy,

Shoes- high heals are popular, and

Accessories- a lot of jewellery in diamonds and silver, also hair bands and colourful belts.

•Like most tribes, pop fashion is influenced by pop artists.

Examples of RNB Artists are:

• Beyonce Knowles,

• Ne-Yo and

• Mariah Carey.

•RNB short for Rhythm and Blues is a genre of popular African American music which originated in the 1940s. The term was used by recording companies to describe African American Artists when urban, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy persistent beat was becoming popular.

•RNB has had a variety of meanings including: electric blues, gospel and soul music (1960s),

Soul and Funk (1970s) and

Contemporary RNB (1980s).

•RNB includes fashion such as:

Clothes- black, white, chocolate, red are sophisticated colours worn as dresses, waist coats, slim jeans and shirts,

Hair- a lot of variety of hairstyles which are all clean cut,

Shoes- women- high healed shoes and for men- black sleek shoes, and

Accessories- diamond jewellery and simple belts.

Examples of Heavy Metal Music are:

Heavy Metal has blues rock and psychedelic rock roots which developed a unique sound through highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats and overall loudness.

•Heavy metal lovers are sometimes confused with Gothic fashion, but in fact, they have their own distinct style:

Clothes- blue jeans, black t-shirts with logos of metal bands, black leather or jean jackets (gaudy clothing)

Hair- down the back long hair has been distinguished as the most crucial feature of metal fashion, (performers usually wore long, dyed, hairspray teased hair),

Shoes- black boots, and

Accessories- chains, metal studs, headbands, jewellery, skulls, leather and crosses.

Heavy Metal Artists are most recognised for their use of makeup, including: lip stick and eyeliner against pale skin.
