SOCIAL LANGUAGES

Different varieties of language that allow us to express different socially significant identities: example: talking, writing, and enact different socially meaning activities, example: offering a proof of mathematics, writing a prescription in medicine, etc.

Social languages introduce through an initial discussion of how WHOS and WHATS are communicated in language about: “whos-doing-whats”.

Social languages are what we learn and what we speak. The term Social languages is used to talk about the role of the language in Discourses, which involve coordinating language with ways of acting, interacting, valuing, believing, feeling, and with bodies, clothes, non-linguistic symbols, objects, tools, technologies, times, and places.

Each social language has its own distinctive grammar: One grammar is the traditional set of units like nouns, verbs, inflections, phrases, and clauses, so quite inadequately described in traditional school grammars. The other, less studied, but more important grammar is the “rules” by which grammatical units like nouns and verbs, phrases and clauses are used to create patterns which signal or index characteristic Whos-doing-whats-within-Discourses.

We Speakers and writers design our oral or written utterances to have patterns in them in virtue of which interpreters can attribute situated identities and specific activities to us.

INTERTEXTUALLY

It refers to cases where one oral or written text directly or indirectly quotes another text or alludes to another text in yet more subtle ways.

.One text can incorporate words from another one in a great variety of different ways. It can directly quote another text as: “It´s funny that Bob said. I´ll never give up”, or indirectly quote it, as “It´s funny that Bob said he would never give up”, or can be referred to what hearers or readers in the know will realize are words taken from some other source.

As conclusion, according to Norman Fairclough, “INTERTEXTUALLY” is basically the property texts have of being full of snatches of other texts, which may be explicitly demarcated, and which text may assimilate, contradict, ironically echo, and so forth.

CONVERSATIONS

They are debates in society or within specific social groups: focused in items such as smoking, abortion, that large numbers of people recognize, in terms of both what “sides” there are to take in such debates and what sorts of people tend to be on each side.

When we talking about things like the general societal discussion with the topics of abortion or smoking, we are using the word «discussion» about the public debates that swirl aorund us in the media, in our reading, and in our interactions with other people, not any one specific discussion among specific people.

This knowledge is an ever-present background we can bring to interpret things we hear and read or in terms of which we can formulate our own talk and writing.

Social languages, Intertextually, conversations are thinking devices that guide us to ask certain sorts of questions, faced with a piece of oral or written language.
