What is Slow Food Monteregio?Monteregio castle is the symbol giving the name to the DOC wines “Monteregio di Massa Marittima”. The team Slow Food Monteregio was born in May 2002 taken the name and the territory from this wine denomination. Monteregio area is difficult to represent in few images, since, in its manifold microcosms, it is a really complex territory that goes from the blue sea Tirreno, between Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia passing thru Follonica,to the mountains Cornate slopes. Hereby you can find changing views, from the moonlike panorama in the geothermic area of Monterotondo Msrittimo, to the smooth hills full of chestnut trees and olive trees in Montieri, Roccastrada, Gavorrano and Scarlino: small and big villages around the artistic jewel of Massa Matittima.Few words about the municipalities included in the Monteregio territory, wich have a number of national certification about beauty and sustainability: Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia (Blue Flag for their sea), Massa Marittima (Orange Flag for good food and wine), Scarlino (its Cala Violina: one of the 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in Italy); and again: Legambiente 5 Seils to Massa Marittima for its Accesa lake and to Castiglione della Pascaia for its sea; Massa Marittima is “Città Slow” (for its marriage with Slow Food philosophy). In Monteregio area there is the Colline Metallifere Grossetane Technological and Mineralogical Park (whose territory includes 7 municipality). This park was acknowledged from Unesco which included it in its European net Tuscan Mining Geopark.Monteregio is a territory with an identity consolidated in the last years finding in Slow Food Monteregio a promoter of the good, clean and right expression of this country.

• Taste laboratories In the first 2 years only 3 taste laboratories were done, all during the

manifestation called “Calici D’Inverno”. At the end of 2005 10 laboratories (of wich 8 dedicated to wine). where realized. In 2006 there was a further development, which took to an almost unique phenomenon in the Slow Food international panorama :the idea was to take biodiversity on the table, a journey on “food for brain” thru senses. Thanks to this idea has been possible to enlarge the possibility to know our territory thru degustation of its products. At the same time it has been possible to give an opportunity to the numerous participants to improve their taste ability with a serious approach to degustation knowledge. From 2006 up to 100 Taste Laboratories were done with these main topics: olive oil, cheese, deserts, honey, bread, cacao, sausage, rice, vegetables, fruit, water, mushrooms, pizza, marmalade, bier, fish, aromatic herbs, truffle, legume. More topics: chestnuts, basil, beans, chickpeas, cherries, chards, plums, cicerchia, saffron, sweet wines, panforte, focaccia.
