“Do men think that on their [mere] saying, ‘We believe,’ they will be left to themselves, and will not be put to a test? Yea, indeed, we did test those who lived before them; and so too, [shall be tested those Muslims who is now living and] most certainly will He mark out those who prove themselves true, and most certainly will He mark out those who are lying.”

The key to achieving increase bestowal from Allah.
• yet how does one become grateful? What are the important criteria?
1. Acknowledge the true giver, Allah Who is the Bestower of those favours.
2. Learn the value of what is given, do not take any of these favours for granted.
3. Utilize what is given in accordance to what may please the Giver (i.e. do not abuse the gift), so as not to cause His wrath to befall us.

The worst is to say to them “ah!” or such expression of disgust, or any other acts which are meant to hurt their feelings, to demean, to despise, to degrade etc. to make them loose their respect and dignity.

Abu Bakar r.a. narrated the Rasulullah s.a.w. once said:“Shall I inform you all of three of the greatest sins (al-
kabaa-ir)?” We replied: “Certainly O Messenger of Allah”. He then said: “To commit ‘Shirk’ (setting up partners to Allah), to be disobedient towards parents, and to speak falsehood or bear witness to falsehood.”

1. To obey parents, except in matters of ma’siyya (sins or disobedience towards Allah and His Messenger).
2. Bear with their ways with patience, speaking to them with respect and soft-tone voice in all situation.
3. To stand in respect when they arrive or enter into their presence.
4. To kiss their hands whenever required.
5. To preserve their good names, their honourable status and their properties. 39

7. Always involve them in your consultations of matters.
8. Always make Du’a (supplicate) for their well-being and seek Allah’s forgiveness for them.
9. When they receive guests, be ready nearby to serve, just in case your parents need your assistance regarding them.

10.To always do things which will please them, even though they did not request.
11.Do not irritate them with being loud in speech etc. in their presence.
12.Do not interrupt them when they speak.
13.Do not leave the house or leave their presence without taking leave from them (i.e. seek their permission)
14.Do not disturb their rest or sleep.41

15.Do not put or exceed others (wife or children) in preference over them.
16.Do not criticise them when their opinion may not be agreeable to you.
17.Do not laugh in their presence, lest they may misinterpret that, as your mocking or making fun of them.
18.Do not begin eating before them, unless they have permitted.

19.Do not stretch out to take food before them, when dining together with them.
20.Do not lie down, slouch or sleep when they are sitting with you, unless they permit.
21.Do not stretch out your feet at them or in front of them.
22.Do not enter before them, or walk ahead of them.

23.Be quick to respond to their call – and response with “lab-bayk !” (meaning – “Yes! at your service”).
24.To honour and respect all their friends, even after they (your parents) have passed away - i.e. to continue showing friendship with their friends.
25. Do not befriend any person who is disrespectful to their own parents.
26.Express your love to them, and for them (i.e. if speaking with others). 44
