“CONSIDER the flight of time! Verily, man is bound to

lose himself (in state of LOSS) unless he be of those

who attain to faith (AAMANU), and do good works

(‘AMAL-AS-SWO-LIHAT), and enjoin upon one another

the keeping to truth (TAU-WA-SWI –BIL-HAQQ), and

enjoin upon one another patience in adversity (TAU-

WA-SWI –BIS-SWOBR’).”

(Qur’an: ‘Asr: 103: 1-3)

Allah SWT here swears by “Allah SWT here swears by “WAL-’ASRWAL-’ASR” – mostly understood by scholars ” – mostly understood by scholars

Essentially, Allah SWT is referring to something very significant and Essentially, Allah SWT is referring to something very significant and

Therefore indeed we are all losers with time. Therefore indeed we are all losers with time.

When asked “What is IIMAN?” he ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص , enumerated six things:

[1] Believe in Allah;

[2] Believe in His angels;

[3] Believe in His Revealed Books;

[4] Believe in His Messengers and Prophets;

[5] Believe in Judgment Day and Life in the Hereafter;

[6] Believe in the Decree and Foreknowledge of Allah.

Yet Yet IIMANIIMAN alone is insufficient. The second requirement is to do good alone is insufficient. The second requirement is to do good

works, termed as ‘works, termed as ‘A-MILUS-A-MILUS-SWSWO-LIO-LIHHAAT AAT . .

What constitute ‘good’ works or ‘righteousness’ has been specified in What constitute ‘good’ works or ‘righteousness’ has been specified in

ISLAMISLAM (submission or surrender to the guidance of Allah’s way) termed (submission or surrender to the guidance of Allah’s way) termed

as as SHARI’AHSHARI’AH. And it must be . And it must be done with sincere intention done with sincere intention to serve or to serve or

worship Allah SWT – the concept termed as worship Allah SWT – the concept termed as AL-IAL-IHHSANSAN..

personal obligation being [1] personal obligation being [1] ShahadatainShahadatain; [2]; [2] Swolah Swolah [3] [3] Zakah Zakah [4] [4]

Interestingly in this Surah, merely having Interestingly in this Surah, merely having IIMANIIMAN (Faith) and striving (Faith) and striving

with ‘with ‘AMILUS-SWOLIAMILUS-SWOLIHHAAT AAT (doing good works or righteousness), is still (doing good works or righteousness), is still

insufficient. Allah stipulated 2 more aspects that must be fulfilled:insufficient. Allah stipulated 2 more aspects that must be fulfilled:

[1] [1] enjoin the keeping to truth (TAUWA-SWI –BIL-HAQQ),

[2] enjoin patience in adversity (TAUWA-SWI –BIS-SWOBR’).

These 2 aspects underscore an important aspect of human life, as social

being who are in need of each other in educating one other towards

truth and our responsibility towards each other to strive and persevere

patiently in facing trials and tribulations of life.

Amazingly in just only 3 verses of this “Surah Al-’Asr”, Allah SWT provide

adequately in a nutshell, the principles of this DEEN-UL-ISLAM.

“Every soul is bound to taste death (MAWT) : but only on

the Day of Resurrection (YAUM-AL-QIYAA-MAH) will you

be requited in full [for whatever you have done] -

whereupon he that shall be drawn away from the fire

(AN-NAAR) and brought into paradise (AL-JANNAH) will

indeed have gained a triumph (FAAZ): for the life of this

world (HAYAA-TID-DUNYA) is nothing but an enjoyment

of self-delusion (GHURUR).”

“O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will

save you from a painful punishment? [It is that] you (TU’-MINUU)

believe in Allah and His Messenger and (TU-JAA-HIDUU) strive in the

cause of Allah (SABEELILLAAH) with your wealth (AMWAA-LIKUM)

and your lives (ANFUSIKUM). That is best for you, if you should

know. He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens

beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of

perpetual residence. That is the great attainment (FAUZUL-’AZEEM).”

down to your graves. Nay, in time you will come to

understand! And once again: Nay, in time you will come to

understand! Nay, if you could but understand [it] with an

understanding [born] of certainty, you would indeed, most

surely, behold the blazing fire [of hell]! In the end you will

indeed, most surely, behold it with the eye of certainty: and

on that Day you will most surely be called to account for

[what you did with] the boon of life!

CLARIFICATION REGARDING THOSE

WHO MAY MISINTERPRETE MEANING

It is referring only to the deceased Muslim’s opportunity – ability – for doing any more good deeds that has ceased with his death;

However, the deceased Muslims can still benefit from the deeds of the rest of Muslims still living; or from the deeds performed in their memory for them ; or Du’a invoked for them; etc

Regarding the 3 exceptions (ability-opportunity to doing) mentioned, it would mean these acts (after his death) are as though he is still doing them.

“Hence, whoever JAAHADUU -strives hard [in Allah’s

cause] does so only for his own good: for, verily, Allah does

not stand in need of anything in all the worlds!

And as for those who attain to faith (AAMANU) and do

righteous deeds (‘AMAL-AS-SWOLIHAAT), We shall most

certainly efface their [previous] bad deeds, and shall most

certainly reward them in accordance with the best that

they ever did. ”
