The Australian Curriculum Statistics and Probability (Data representation and interpretation) Pose questions and collect categorical or numerical data by observation or survey (ACMSP118) Construct displays, including column graphs, dot plots and tables, appropriate for data type, with and without the use of digital technologies (ACMSP119) Describe and interpret different data sets in context (ACMSP120) Learning Intention Students will explore the science behind sleep and examine their own sleep patterns by conducting a sleep study and reflective journal. Students will pose questions and collect data using observations and surveys. Task:

1. After watching the Behind the News Kids Sleep answer a survey on sleep. 2. Answer small quiz about sleep

3. Conduct your own sleep study. Record how long you use electronic devices for before going to bed and how many hours of sleep you get each night. Then reflect on your results.

4. Keep a reflective journal on your sleep patterns and use of technological devices before bedtime. (The purpose of a reflective journal is an opportunity for students to write a personal account of events and experiences, and to then reflect on their own learning).

5. Graph your results

Part 1: Survey

Why do we sleep?

How does lack of sleep make you feel?

How much sleep do you think you need each day?

Page 2: Sleep investigation

Why is it important for kids to get enough sleep?

How does melatonin work?

Suggest good and bad activities to do before bed?

Part 2: Small sleep quiz

Many activities we are not consciously aware of continue when we are at rest to keep our bodies going. All of these require energy. Which of the following activities occur while we are asleep? Please colour in your answers.

Part 3: Conduct your own sleep study. Record how long you use electronic devices for before going to bed and how many hours of sleep you get each night. Then reflect on your results. Part 4: Keep a reflective journal on your sleep patterns and use of technological devices before bedtime. (The purpose of a reflective journal is an opportunity for students to write a personal account of events and experiences. Include in your reflection: How was your sleep? What made it a good or bad sleep? What was your technology usage like for the whole day? What is your prediction for the next nights sleep?

Graph your results

- Create a column graph with your sleep pattern results for the week. Also,

within that same graph, add in your technology usage displaying your daily

usage.
