INTRODUCTION The foundation stone of Mohammadan Anglo
Oriental College (earlier name of sir syed hall) Aligarh was laid by Lord Lytton in 1877.
The MAO College had two square shaped adjacent campus. The southern portion was named after Sir Syed and the northern area was named after Syed Mahmood. Presently these portions are respectively called as Sir Syed Hall (South) and Sir Syed Hall (North).
Sir syed hall is known as the heart of the Aligarh Muslim University which earlier served as MAO college.
The Victoria gate, Strachtey hall, provost office, and the central hall of Mc’donalds all lie along the same axis.
ACCESS: Sir syed hall south is accessed through the left gate of university circle straight through the Victoria gate and north campus accessed through entering through the bab-e-syed.
TYPE: It is a residential building for Aligarh muslim university students with a total capacity of about 1263 students.
FORM: This building is a great example of islamic architecture.
The site plan is rectangular in shape and north campus and south campus is joined by Stratchey hall and Jama masjid accessed through both the campus. Each of the campus is courtyard type planning. The form of the campus is almost symmetrical through both the horizontal and vertical axis.
ELEMENTS: Patterns and symmetries are extensively done. Pointed islamic arch with alternate bull’s eye arch is repeatedly used in the building. Whole building is made of exposed brick work.
STRUCTURE: Thick walls and high rise roofs are constructed which helps in keeping the building cool.
Brick cladding is done on the roof which prevents from extensive heating of the building. The plinth level of the building is 300 mm.
Brick cladding on the roof to keep the building cool.
Good vegetation around the periphery of the building which reduces the noise pollution and keeps the environment fresh.
Double height and beautiful paintings and lightings are provided for improving the aesthetics.
CLOCK TOWER IS CONSTRUCTED ON THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE BUILDING WHICH SERVES AS THE LAND MARK OF THE BUILDING.
BEAUTIFUL CARVINGS ARE DONE ON THE COLUMNS AND WALLS OF THE BUILDING.
