Sin City (2005) A neo-noir film - a style that predominately uses codes and conventions of film noir, incorporating other themes, stories, styles and so on that were not seen in the original period of film noir. Similar characteristics of film noir e.g. silhouettes Focuses on four inter-related narratives – non-linear narrative Intertextualised from Frank Miller’s popular comics. “A beautiful, digital form to an ugly urban dystopia (“Basin City”)” Blood red is the only colour that can be seen throughout the film, everything else is black and white Though the women in Sin City are used as sex appeal, they protect themselves - something which is not found in classic narrative texts “All of Rodriguez’s films are prime examples of style without meaning, style for its own sake” Film collages “references from different areas of popular culture in a pastiche that alludes to comic books, TV sitcoms and old films and in the end is all style and no content.” Black and white to create a comic effect Quentin Tarantino – guest directed a scene – homage e.g. Miho assassin Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction Hyper-reality – blood showing its true colour occasionally against the grey, black and white background Aside from the blood, eye colour can be shown at times as well as Junior who turns yellow.
