Varoussi, the old city “Varousi” is the name of the old

town of Trikala. The etymology of the word "Varousi" means the district outside the castle. It was the Christian district during the Turkish rule until the 1930s.

The old houses were built between the 17th and 19th centuries and they were made basically with canes, plaster or bricks.

Nowadays the new houses built in the district have to follow the same architecture.

Twenty-four monasteries, many cells, and hermitages flourished scattered all over the rocks for over 600 years.

Today the functioning monasteries are only six: “Great Meteoro”, “Varlaam”, “Agia Triada”, “Agios Stefanos” “Roussanou” and “St. Nicholas Anapafsas”.

Everyday innumerable visitors gather from all over the world for meditation and prayer. They also have the opportunity to know the life of the monks, admire the indescribable landscape, the artistic architecture and iconography and moreover study the priceless relics.
