A great short film, simple but ever so effective with a good punch line.
A man (Richard Kind) tries to kill himself in a motel room but a noisy neighbour breaks his focus.
Director’s notes
David Rysdahl (writer/producer/co-star) and I worked on this together for months based off a script
he wrote about a friend of his from Minnesota, where he grew up. It’s a dark story in which the
audience is really trapped in one character’s experience, so we were naturally attracted to
psychological films with austere aesthetics by filmmakers like Hitchcock, Polanski, and the Coen
Brothers.
Since we were partners on this we split the already low budget down the middle so neither of our
bank accounts suffered too dramatically.
Video/image This review allows you to watch the short film when reading this review, the fact that this
review is not very extensive I believe that this review is for someone wanting to get a little
idea about if this is worth watching. So therefore by having a interactive image on which you
can watch the short it makes it easier for the reader to decide whether to watch the film or
not.
This review also includes images in its layout and I feel some of them connote immaturity.
Perhaps this review website is for a younger audience. This is supported by the lack of text
as a younger audience will not be interested in a full review they just want to know if it’s
worth watching.
Language and register The overall text is very short and sweet not wasting any time getting to the point.
- “A great short film, simple but ever so effective with a good punch line ”
That is the whole written review, very positive and very to the point through the use of a
declarative.
- “A man (Richard Kind) tries to kill himself in a motel room but a noisy neighbour breaks
his focus.”
Once again a use of a declarative statement to get straight to the point and give the
reader a brief introduction the shorts plot.
Use of media terminology in the rating section (jargon).
- E.g. “story line” “cinematography”
Use of media terminology creates a very trustworthy nature to the site. This will make
the reader believe the review and therefore influence their decision to watch the short.
This does not use a lot of language that relates to the films genre and therefore I don’t believe this
review to be extensive enough to influence me to watch the short. But I do understand that this may
be aimed at people not looking for a long review and just want to know if it’s good or bad.
Layout 5 star award stamp
- This bold purple and white stamp gives a great representation of the film straight away
and it goes with the colour scheme of the site creating an interesting layout.
Video acts as picture around the border of the review
- The video is almost like a background for the review and this creates a more personal
review for the short.
Star review system
- The purple stars and overall score of “5 stars” not only creates a positive representation
of the short, but it also creates a very clean and uncluttered look for the site. This gives
the reader a clear first introduction to the film. Once again it fits with the colour scheme.
