Ficus carica• Genus: Ficus

Species: caricaCultivar: 'Brown Turkey'Exposure: Full sun, Partial shadeHardiness: HardySoil type: Well-drained/light, Clay/heavy, Chalky/alkaline, SandyHeight: 300cmSpread: 450cm

• Figs are native trees of Syria and Persia, and have been grown in Britain since Roman times. Only a few varieties are hardy enough for outdoor cultivation on warm walls, where they survive most winters unscathed - very hard prolonged frosts may kill all the top growth, but plants revive from below ground.

Rosmarinus officinalis• Common Name: Rosemary

Genus: RosmarinusSpecies: officinalisExposure: Full sunHardiness: HardySoil type: Well-drained/light, Dry, SandyHeight: 150cmSpread: 150cm

• Rosemary is one of the oldest Mediterranean aromatic shrubs in cultivation. It is still regarded as an essential culinary and medicinal herb, with an invigorating spicy flavour. As a specimen garden plant it is handsome and impressive at all times, especially when covered with its lovely flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Plant against a warm wall to help it to gain extra height, and preferably in a position where it is brushed in passing to release its lingering scent. To keep plants in shape, trim after flowering.

Pinus pinae

• Common Name: Stone pineGenus: PinusSpecies: pineaSkill Level: BeginnerExposure: Full sunHardiness: HardySoil type: Well-drained/lightHeight: 2000cmSpread: 1200cm

• This attractive Mediterranean pine is conical when young, becoming domed with age. The blue-green juvenile leaves are retained for several years and shiny cones ripen in their third year. Like most pines, it will thrive in any well-drained soil in full sun.

Prunus avium• Common Name: Wild cherry

Genus: PrunusSpecies: aviumCultivar: 'Plena'Exposure: Full sunHardiness: HardySoil type: Well-drained/light, MoistHeight: 1200cmSpread: 1200cm

• The big advantage of growing 'Plena', and not its much bigger species parent, is that it has double white flowers, and makes a fantastic show in May when it's in full bloom. There's another good show in the autumn when the dark green leaves colour up before falling.

• Shape:Oval• Margin:Serrulate• Venation:Pinnate
