Project 2 Structural Analysis of a Bungalow Submission Date: Week 12 (21st November 2016, Monday)

Introduction The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of building structure. Objectives of Project The objectives of this project are as follows:

To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.

To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout Design, Building Structure Engineering Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and Calculations, Final Report and Presentation.

Learning Outcomes

Produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study

Explore and understand the concept of structural analysis

Identification of structural components

Recognize, Execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design

Produce a structural proposal

Tasks - Methodology The assignment is divided into two parts, first part should be done in a group while the second part is an individual work. Part 1 – 15% (Group components) Working in a group of 3 members, each group is to design a 2 storey bungalow which consist of the following components:

1. 1 master bedroom with attached bathroom 2. Minimum 3 bedrooms 3. 2 bathrooms 4. Kitchen 5. Living hall 6. Dining area 7. 1 store room.

The building layout should be a combination of building outline shown in category A and B attached. Next, students are required to carry out structural framing for the building (to design the skeleton of the structural). Part 2 – 25% (Individual components) Each student is required to:

1. To analysis minimum 6 beams (each beam must subject to different types of load, i.e. UDL from one or more than one slabs, beam with point load(s) or combination of UDL and PL)

2. To analysis minimum 3 columns (from roof to foundation level)

Submission Requirement

An A4 Report which consist of the following,

- Cover page - Name and student ID of all group members - Brief description of the bungalow - All floor plans (ground floor, first floor and roof plan)

** Section, elevation and perspective drawing will be optional

- Structural plans which inclusive of foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and roof plan. **Structural plans are plan which only shows structural component of a building, typically consists of beams, columns, slab and staircase.

- Design brief which summarize the weight of material and live load assumed - Beam analysis report which consists of: (a separator to separate the report done by different student)

o Load distribution plans for beam design **indicate live load assumed for each room on floor plans **live load for roof is taken as 0.5kN/m2 and 1.0kN/m2 as dead load

o Load Diagram o Bending moment diagram o Shear force diagrams

- Column analysis report which consists of: (a separator to separate the report done by different student) o Load distribution plans for column design o Estimation of column load o Suggested column size

Assessment Criteria

The assessment for this assignment will be based on: - Understanding and concept of structural system (ability to identify the structural components based

on evidence) - Application of knowledge, concept and skill

o Ability to identify critical structural members o Ability to analyse structural members

Marking Criteria

Marks shall be distributed as follow : Group Component (15%) Understanding of load distribution path Understanding of structural framing Clarity of structural plans Individual Component (25%)

Understanding of structural analysis which inclusive the following : - 20% - Ability to Identify and quantify loads acting on beams and columns - Understanding of structural analysis - Ability to choose the propose appropriate member size
