Earth moves in TWO WAYS

1. EARTH ROTATION-- The spinning of Earth on its axis.

Axis-the imaginary line that goes through the center of the Earth.

“EARTH ROTATES AROUND ITS AXIS ONCE A DAY.”

Page 4: Season, Phases of the Moon, and Tides

2. EARTH REVOLUTION---is the movement of the Earth its orbit.

ORBITThe path that an object follows as it revolves around another object.

“EARTH REVOLVES AROUND THE SUN ONCE A YEAR.”

Why do we have seasons?

The seasons are caused by tilt of Earth’s axis as it moves around the sun.

The Earth’s orbit around the sun is NOT a perfect circle. It is an ellipse.

PhasesThe different shapes of the moon visible

from Earth.

The moon’s phases are caused by changes in the relative positions of the MOON, SUN, and EARTH as the moon revolves around the Earth.

Lunar Month• It takes about 29.5 days for the moon to

complete a full cycle of phases from full moon to new moon and back again.

ECLIPSES• Occurs when the shadow of one body in

space falls on another.• Occurs only when the moon crosses

Earth’s ecliptic plane at the time of a new moon or full moon.

SOLAR ECLIPSE• During a new moon, when a new moon is

between the sun and Earth, Earth may pass through the shadow of the moon.

• It occurs when the moon casts a shadow on a portion of Earth’s surface.

the sun and moon, the moon may pass through Earth’s shadow.

• It occurs when Earth casts a shadow on the moon.

TIDES• Are the regular rise and fall of ocean

waters.• caused mainly by differences in the

moon’s gravitational pull on Earth.

HIGH TIDES• High tides are when the water reaches its

highest point.
