What Is Seam????

A Line Along Which Two Or More Fabrics Are Joined By Fusion, Glueing, Sewing, Stapling Or Alternative Method Is Termed As Seam.

Factors of seam properties:

Seam type.Stitch type.Needle size & type.Thread size & type.Feed mechanism at sewing M/C

Seam Type

Seam type:

There are 8 types of seam. They are,

1. Seam class-1 ( Superimposed seam ).

2. Seam class-2 ( Lapped Seam ).3. Seam class-3 ( Bound Seam ).4. Seam class-4 ( Flat Seam ).5. Seam class-5 ( Decorative Seam ).6. Seam class-6 ( Edge Neatening ).7. Seam class-7.8. Seam class-8.

1. Seam class-1 (Superimposed seam):

Figure: Super Imposed Seam

This type of seam is formed by correctly placing the ends of the fabric on the other ends of the fabric & sewn.

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-2 ( Lapped Seam ):

Simplest seam is formed by lapping of the pieces of fabric.

The seam end of the fabric are in opposite direction & overlapping one end on other which is shown in the figure.

Figure: Lapped Seam.

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-3 ( Bound Seam ):Here one edge of the fabric is bound by the other

fabric

Figure: Bound Seam

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-4 ( Flat Seam ):Two pieces of fabric are laid flat with their edges closing each other

without overlapping.Seam are produced with minimum of two pieces of component. Both components are limited on one end but they are put

opposition to each other on the same level

Figure: Flat Seam

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-5 ( Decorative Seam ):This type of seam is made by making one or more

adjacent stitch lines in one or more layer of fabric.

Figure: Decorative Seam

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-6 ( Edge Neatening ):This type seam is used to bind the edge of fabric, so that

thread can not be drawn off.

Figure: Edge Neatening

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-7:A narrow piece is sewn to the edge of a garment part.Seams are produced with minimum of two pieces of

component. One component is limited on one end, and the other narrow one is limited on both ends.

Figure: Seam Class-7

Location of needle penetration of passage:

Seam class-8:Mainly one piece of fabric is used. The Edge of the fabric is sewn by folding in various

ways.Belt & belt loops are made by this seam.
