The role of local and community radio stations is to discuss your local issues such as, recent crime, policing, government’s cuts, education matters etc.

Local radio stations will broadcast recent news around your borough and keep you informed with any recent happenings in and around your community.

There are 2 radio stations which broadcast in Oldham. First of all there is THE REVOLUTION which is an independent local radio station. This broadcasts to the areas of Oldham, Tameside and Rochdale. The second one is a local radio station which is known as OLDHAM COMMUNITY RADIO. This is based in Oldham itself.

The Revolution targets 25-54 year olds and plays a broad mix of adult contemporary and soft rock hits.

The target audience for Oldham Community Radio is school children and students. Also young people aged 16-25, the over 60s and black minority ethnic communities.

The objectives for OCR are to broadcast focus weeks during their first year. This could be mental health. They want to showcase activities to bring the whole community together. Their aim is to strengthen community cohesion and they also intend to develop their website and include links to it.

The money comes from funding providers such as national lottery. In one year, OCR gets funded over £200,000.

OCR sources its news from the Sky News Centre. This is because OCR cannot afford to broadcast their own news bulletin. So they don’t do it in house but instead pay Sky News to broadcast their news bulletin to their radio station.

My bulletin fits into this because my bulletin is targeted at school children and students. OCR has this target audience aswell. Their time slot is between 7am to 9am for school children and students and this is the same as my time slot. I could easily broadcast my news bulletin if I wanted to.

If my news bulletin was to be broadcast on OCR, then a weakness in my news bulletin would be is that it is quite short and it’s less than 4 minutes and should preferably be longer. The strengths of my news bulletin is that it has everything that a news bulletin should have like a hard story, soft story, off the wall story, news correspondents’, sound bed and jingle. It would attract my audience because it has an appropriate time slot and it would be no use it my bulletin was broadcast during the afternoon when 16-19 year old won’t tune in because they would be in school or college.
