We started Section 1 in our 3rd book. Here are important facts! We also

had a surprise visitor. Me!

Vertebrate- Vertebrate- animal with skull and backbone

Invertebrate-Invertebrate- animals without backbones

Tissues- Tissues- are collections of similar tissues

Organ- Organ- combination of two or more tissues

An animal must find food and water, avoid being eaten, and have a place to live.

Survival Behavior

Predators- animals that eat other animalsPrey- the animal being eatenInnate behavior- behavior that doesn’t depend on learning or experienceLearned behavior- behavior that has been learned from experience or from observing other animalsHibernation- period of inactivity that some animals experience in winter that allows them to survive on stored body fatEstivation- a period of reduced; happens in summerBiological clock- internal control of natural cyclesCircadian Rhythms- biological clocks that control daily cycles

Animals have adapted to their surroundings so that they can obtain the most food using the least amount of energy

Many animals mimic twigs, leaves, stones, bark or other material. Blending in with the background is called Camouflage.

Animals protect themselves by their dangerous features (ex. Horns), spray attackers with irritating chemicals or inject powerful acids.

Chemical weapons are often shown but the animal’s outer layer, which has a bright design. This is called warning coloration.

Most common is : shades of red, yellow, orange, black and white

Animals may use their surroundings, such as the length of the day and the temperature to set their clocks.

Animals use landmarks to navigate. Landmarks are fixed objects that animal uses to find its way.

Animals use the position of the sun and star as a map.

Birds navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field.

Social behavior- interaction between animals of the same speciesCommunication- the transfer of a signal from one animal to another that results in some type of response

Territory- an area that is occupied by an animal(s)

Pheromone- a chemical produced by animals for communication
