Mixed Media in the Classroom
Mixed Media Collage
Sandi’s Inspirations
Nerdy History Awesomeness
In the early history of art, painting techniques and drawing techniques usually did not mix.
If an artist began a painting with oil paints he stuck with that medium throughout the work.
History of Mixed MediaThere are examples of artwork that incorporates
more than one medium dating back to the third
century of the Byzantine Empire. Artists of that era
regularly incorporated gold leaf into mosaics and
even paintings
Late in the fifteenth century Leonardo da Vinci mixed pastels with other drawing media.
Meanwhile, back in the classroom

Composition
Make sure to leave enough space around the subject so you don’t cut off a body part
No clutter in the background. A drop cloth or a sheet would be the best solution, or if your are outside, find a blank wall
Shooting where there is plenty of light to illuminate your subject. Make sure that the subject is not back lit.
Make sure the camera/ipad is stable
Have students figure out the pose before you go outside to take photos.
Make sure that the subject is in focus
Make sure the model and photographer the are synchronized, the model has to be in the right pose when the photographer takes the photo
Avoid areas that have a lot of information, textures, or distractions in the background
Make sure there is enough contrast between the model and the background
Don’t take photos in the direct sunlight.
Make sure body parts are not cut off. Anticipate where the model will end up, and leave space for that in the composition
Make sure the model is in focus
Take at least ten photos and then pick the best
I do not let my students use finger gestures in any of their photos, as this stifles their creativity.
