SC Battles of the American Revolution

Battle of Sullivan's Island

• This was one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. The British wanted to try to capture Charles Town because of it's harbor and because it was such an important and wealthy city. To protect Charles Town, Colonel William Moultrie and his troops built a palmetto fort on Sullivan's Island. This fort was able to stand up to the British ships that were firing on it.

While in Charles Town, the British were very cruel to the colonists! Because of this, South Carolinians and other colonists formed militias that helped the regular Continental Army.

Who Won?

• Col. Moultrie and his troops won this battle for the colonies! They were able to protect Charles Town through their defense of Fort Moultrie.
