OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM
Pfeiffer-Burleigh School
Three-year pilot program aimed at better addressing the needs of Erie’s students and families
Collaboration between Erie’s Public Schools & the United Way of Erie County
The following were chosen as the first five schools of this new initiative: 1. Edison Elementary (PreK-5) 2. Emerson-Gridley Elementary (PreK-5) 3. McKinley Elementary (PreK-5) 4. Pfeiffer-Burleigh School (PreK-8) 5. Wayne School (PreK-8)
Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center applied to be a Lead Partner for the Community School Pilot Program and was chosen by Pfeiffer-Burleigh School
COMMUNITY SCHOOL MODEL The Community School Model is a proven, nationwide strategy for
organizing school and community resources around student success. Examples of other successful community school models in PA: Philadelphia & Allentown
Goal of the Community School: To address non-academic barriers to learning and increase community engagement in the success of the school’s students and their families.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL MODEL A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships that help
address health, wellness and the social needs of students and their families
New opportunities & services this program will target:*Physical & mental health services for students and families*Mentoring*More afterschool and summer learning opportunities for
students*Activities & classes for children, families and community
members in the evenings and on weekends (located at the school) “…the community schools strategy
will provide a framework to bridge the gaps between home, school and neighborhood…”

ROLE OF THE LEAD PARTNER Lead Partners for the Community School Program:
1. Pfeiffer-Burleigh School (Sarah A. Reed Children's Center)2. Edison Elementary (Achievement Center)
3. Emerson-Gridley Elementary (Gannon University) 4. McKinley Elementary (United Way of Erie County, Lead Agency &
Edinboro University, Lead Service Provider)5. Wayne School (Safe Harbor Behavioral Health of UPMC Hamot)
Sarah Reed is currently working with a team from Pfeiffer-Burleigh, United Way, Erie Insurance, Erie’s Public Schools and the Booker T. Washington Center to hire a Community School Director. He/she will work full-time to coordinate services and programs for the 800 students at Pfeiffer-Burleigh & their families
Community School Director acts as a liaison between Pfeiffer-Burleigh, Sarah Reed and the
Erie community. He/she will work closely with principal (Karin Ryan) and Lead Agency contact person (Gary Bukowski)

OVERALL PROGRAM GOALS & IMPACT Increased visibility in the community for Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center
Ability to help more children and families, through Sarah Reed’s programs & services as well as additional support services in the Erie community
New school-based health center at Hamilton Campus (Primary Health Network) could serve as a key collaborative partner for medical care/immunizations – Need transportation
Community School impact:*Improved academic performance*Higher attendance rates*Positive school climate*Improved school safety*Greater parent involvement*Enhanced community resource alignment/collaboration*Improved coordination of support service delivery*Increased health & well-being of Erie’s youth & families
