HISTORY

The building was built in the half seventeen century and near the paintings and sculptures inside houses is an important historic, artistic and architectonicl, called Madrid de los Austrias.

FOUNDATION

This is one of the oldest temples in Madrid. which Although it is not known with certainty the exact date of its construction, it is like a hermitage that it was founded by the mozarabs

This is a place steeped in history and related to famous people and Lope De Vega was baptized here .Quevedo, also married here .He was also the favorite temple of Isabel II because , by its location in the center of Madrid ,a short distance from Real palace

The original temple little more we can say only that the chapel was built in 1453 under the patronage of the husbands Goméz and Maria Guillén in 1642 with the destruction of the chapel gave way for the construction of the building to be demolished because it was whole church.

By the early 1640s , because of recent collapse of the land the temple was destroyed and therefore John Ruiz was manager to building a new one,though ancient building materials .In 1645 was finished the body of the church and in 1659 the chapel ‘Santo Cristo .However the construction of other elementS lasted until 1672, the same year that Ruiz died.

INCIDENTSThe church suffered three fires (1724,1756 and 1824) followed

by many restorations.In 1869,the Municipality of the capital, by the architect José María Aguilar,decided to transform the north side,facing the Street of the Arenal a path that was becoming one of the most important nineteenth-century Madrid.Aguilar´s proposal ,which differed greatly from the XV11 century style of San Ginés ,did not please the archbishop who though the priest Jose Moreno Montalbo ,and expressed his opposition to the project.

The original building which is only the bell tower is the mudejar style . The current structure corresponds to the reform bear the temple in 1645.A fire caused the destruction of the dome and the covers of the three ships which were renew in the eighteenth century.
