Preface

Vocabulary acts as your “communication toolbox”, helping you choose words with greater

precision. Researcher Johnson O’Connor, known for his studies about the impact of

vocabulary on people’s lives, has drawn many amazing conclusions from a vast amount of

tests and experiments, performed in more than 20 years of research. The fundamental

idea being a person’s vocabulary level is the best single predictor of occupational success,

especially for knowledge workers.

Linguistic competencies continue to be the foundations of learning, emotional development

and socializing and securing a wide range of life choices. We intend to inculcate in all our

student participants curiosity, interest and means to develop their linguistic abilities in all

realms.

If vocabulary is related to achieved intelligence and to economic success, our schools,

colleges and institutions need to figure out how to encourage vocabulary growth. Better

and innovative methods must be there that enable quick and easy learning. Word-A-Holic-

Z which has been doing pioneering service in the field of helping thousands of students

across India master power words for more than a year.

How Will It Impact Students

1. Life of any student in India is riddled with exams. He has to face plenty of them right from his Xth to the ones after graduation which allows him to land a job of his liking. All of these exams test his mettle, his intelligence, reasoning skills, aptitude and personality (in the form of interviews).

2. English comprehension forms big chunk of these tests. Comprehending semi difficult to difficult passages requires good vocabulary skills of students. Students are required to master a standard size of 3000-4000 words to ace exams.

3. The rote method of learning words is passé. It’s boring, unscientific and requires multiple repetitions. For the time deficit generation of ours with high Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), the traditional method is definitely not the smart way.

How Will It Impact The College/School?

1. The schools are primarily concerned to ensure students inculcate habits which go a long way in making them successful in lives. Teachers expect students to be well read. This way of learning through contests and use of innovative ways in education will help them in inculcating their reading habits.

2. Good scores in the year end exams, Xth & XIIth exams are the best predictor of the efforts schools have put in their students. This is the best advertisement for the schools. Better vocabulary and better comprehension skills will ensure, students

score best in their board exams. 3. This initial push from the schools will improve the skill sets, intelligence levels of

students. English in the days to come will become the largest spoken of the world and language of preference for business. Allowing this concept early on in the life of a student, will also help the student evolve as better citizens.

In Favour Of Mnemonics:

Our brains like to remember things that are memorable. Numbers, dates, vocabulary

words, and even people’s names usually aren’t very memorable in and of themselves.

Unfortunately, a lot of the information we have to remember in modern life is presented

differently – as words printed on a page. So the key to making anything easier to

remember is simply to make it memorable. Picture associations make bridging the gap

between the concrete states to the symbolic easy.

Unlike the rote system of repetition this system is quick and easy to use. According to

Zelman, “turning information into a silly picture is an easier and more pleasant way to

study….the sillier or absurd the image the more likely you’ll remember or recall it”

In Favour Of Visual Method

Our brain is peculiar. Understanding the way it functions can unravel the mysteries and

we can make more use of it. Research has proved that we use only less than 2% of its

capacity in our lifetime.

Our brains like to remember things that are memorable. Worst part is numbers, dates,

vocabulary words, and even people’s names usually aren’t very memorable in and of

themselves. Unfortunately, a lot of the information we have to remember in modern life is

presented differently – as words printed on a page. This is a major hurdle for the brain

which has to work extra, to remember simple facts. The student has to toil more here.

The key to making anything easier to remember is simply to make it memorable. Picture

associations make bridging the gap between the concrete states to the symbolic easy. A

person understanding of a topic increases 65% when visual medium is used as a tool. This

is the reason Facebook is so big a hit, associating pictures to concepts. There is a reason

why they say a picture is worth thousand words.

Time Tested Best Ways To Build Vocabulary

Read, Read, Read:

Most of the words that you will come across will be through reading. Reading from various

contexts and various texts will help you come across new words. The more you are serious

about this trick the more you will pick up in terms of words. So read quality books,

magazines and newspapers of good repute.

Practice, Practice, Practice:

Learning the word is just the first step. You need to play with the word. Understand how it

comes in the sentence formations and the contexts where it can be used safely. That

requires practice. No two words in English are equal, if at all they may be equivalent.

Research shows you need 6-8 repetitions to master the word and make it a part of your

word-list. So go ahead and practice.

Use Memory Tricks:

Also referred as mnemonics this method helps you form weird associations, visualize

them, play with words, and make them your buddies for life. Linking new words to the

Page 6: Sample Booklet-Vocab Masters Of Jamshedpur

words and concepts you already know is the surest way to ensure, it goes into your

permanent memory system. So try a good mnemonic dictionary.

Keep A Dictionary Handy:

A dictionary should be your best friend when you have targeted improving your skills in

Vocabulary. Be it in physical form, a computer wizard or an app on your mobile device, but

remember, your trip would be unsuccessful without this widget. Keep it handy.

Finally, How Much Can Your Brain Store ??

Students and professionals need to remember a great amount of data. All those blessed

with excellent memory tend to get ahead in their academic or career pursuits while others

lag behind. One of the ways in which we may enhance the brain’s capacity is mnemonics.

All of the best books written on the topic world over on enhancing brain’s power, have the

authors elucidating its benefits. Indian mathematical wizard Shakuntala Devi (referred to

as Human Computer) mentions this one method vividly in her last book. Dr Biswaroop Roy

Chowdhury another memory wizard of India too is an avid proponent.

Using the mnemonics technique for studies students may wonder, on the capacity of the

brain to hold information in terms of storage. We have compiled the below information to

decode data on brain’s capacity.

The human brain contains roughly 100 billion neurons. Each of these neurons seems

capable of making around 1,000 connections. Multiply each of these 100 billion neurons by

the approximately 1,000 connections it can make, and you get 100 trillion data points, or

about 2.5 petabytes of information.

* Your TV with this much content will keep running continuously for more than 300 years.

* This would equate to six thousands of years of MP3 songs listening.

* A stack of CD’s storing this information would rise 9 kilometres high.

* Converted to images this much storage would approximately store 700 crore pictures

(equal to the current world population)

We @ Word-A-Holic-Z (wordaholicz.in) help students use the vast expanse of our memory

capabilities they have to learn power words permanently.

We in our endeavor seek the support of educationists, administrators, policy makers,

curriculum developers, teachers, educators, assessment specialists and parents to prepare

children for a successful life.

Wishing You All The Very Best. Happy Learning !!
