Volunteer instructors aboard ISEA vessels are considered passengers by the Caost Guard and are not allowed to have assigned duties involving safety or operation of the vessels. It is important, however, that ISEA instructors be aware of safety procedures and equipment found aboard each ship. Your primary role is supervision of your student group.

Security Issues

All persons, clothing and carry-on baggage is subject to search prior to boarding. Baggage checks will be made on a random basis.

All adult passengers may be asked to produce picture identification.

All persons on board will need to print their full name on the ship’s manifest and wear a name tag. Group leaders will be asked if all persons in their group are known to them.

The ship and boarding area are subject to continuous video camera surveillance.

B. Companionways can be dangerous

• Keep hatches closed when not in use• Knock and call out “hatch opening”

before coming up from below• Go down backwards• Don’t stand or sit near companionway• Station crew at top of main

companionway as students disembark

G. Operation of the Ship’s Head

• One student at a time to use the head

• Read directions on the bulkhead

• Put nothing in the head you haven’t eaten first (except TP)

• Kleenix, paper towels and Tampex are death to the head

• The Captain enjoys sailing more than plumbing!

• Know where your students are (check group muster card) & make sure they go to next station

• Don’t let students sit in dangerousplaces (near companionways, travelers)

• Don’t let students lean over the side• Don’t use bucket or secchi disk until

vessel is stopped & the Captain says OK• Watch students for seasickness and

hypothermia – report any to LI or Capt.

• Don’t let students lie in bunks• Let one person go to the head at a time• Shorts are not allowed in spring/fall• If it is raining, foul weather gear will

be issued and must be worn by students• Waterproof boots and a change of

clothes are a good idea – there is plenty of room to store extra clothes aboard

Abandon Ship II: In raft•Stay with your student group until relieved by higher authority. Check against 3x5 card and/or Manifest. Check for sickness, injury.

•Maintain morale, encouragement, adventure. Pass out the chocolate. Sing camp songs.

•On reaching safety, know where each student in your group has gone and with whom (teacher, parent, EMT, etc.) This must be in writing with signatures
