WOMEN’S IN INDIA ARE DIFFERENT FROM

OTHERS:Women in India have many things that differentiate them, caste, class, education, and economic status. However, there are important issues that unite them as one religion, domestic violence, female feticide, dowry, a patriarchal society. It is against these social injustices that the Women’s Movement in India fights.

After gaining their independence from British rule in 1947 the Women’s Movement fell silent, however, more localized special interest grass root movements existed. After a wave of highly public violent acts against women in the 1970’s the Women’s movement in India again found it’s voice.

EVE TEASINGEve teasing is a euphemism used

in India and sometimes Pakistan, Bangladesh

and Nepal for publics sexual harassment or molestation of

women by men, with use of the word "Eve" being a reference to the biblical Eve, the first woman.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT-Half of the total number of crimes against women reported in 1990 related to molestation and harassment at the workplace. Eve teasing is a euphemism used for sexual harassment or molestation of women by men.

Sometimes sexual harassment and eve teasing took up very aggressive mode, One of the example is acid throwing this type of action

destroys the whole life of the second person.

In 1961, the Government of India passed the Dowry Prohibition Act, making the dowry demands in wedding arrangements illegal.

However, many cases of dowry-related domestic violence, suicides and murders have been

reported. In the 1980s, numerous such cases were reported.

these advantages have spread to rural populations. However, ultrasound scans can often reveal the sex of the baby, allowing pregnant women to decide to abort female

foetuses and try again for a male child.

Trafficking- In this case mostly women are kidnapped from tribal areas and they are forced into prostitution, domestic work or child labour.

The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act was passed in 1956. However many cases of trafficking of young girls and women have been reported.

Shameless ratio- In India in every 43 minutes a woman is kidnapped.

There have been done many numbers of campaigns from different NGO’s for safety of women in our society. Some of

In Mumbai there is also a squad working of 40 police officers on cases related to eve teasing

called “Mumbai Eve teasing squad”.

This squad is situated in west region of Mumbai, now is stretched from Jogeshwari to Bandra and it

covers 21 police stations.
