Learning
languages at PFUR
PEOPLES’ FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA
48
Department of the Russian language of the Pre-university
faculty headed by E. Motina was the fi rst department estab-
lished at the University. In October 1960, more than 100 pro-
fessors of Russian language started to work in the University.
The Department was divided into sections of Latin America,
South-Eastern Asia, Middle East and Africa and study groups
of international students were formed subject to their majors.
Currently PFUR has 10 departments of Russian language
which teach Russian to Russian and international students.
Russian language is taught by about 300 professors in-
cluding:
20 DSc;
136 PhD;
6 incumbent and corresponding members of state and
public academies of sciences of Russia;
4 honorary workers of higher professional education of the
Russian Federation.
From 2010 to 2014, professors of the Russian language
wrote 500 textbooks and manuals, including 104 with labels
of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Feder-
ation and national academic associations. Textbooks and man-
uals developed at PFUR are widely used in Russian universi-
ties as well as in foreign ones. For instance, the textbook by C.
Khavronina and A. Shirochenskaya “Russian language in exer-
cises” has been used for 50 years and published 70 times in 18
languages.
PFUR specialists in Russian philology participate not only in
academic but also in scientifi c activity as well. For the last 5
years they have prepared 2,500 publications, including:
450 works published in scientifi c journals featured in High-
er Attestation Commission register;
500 publications issued abroad;
45 monographs;
scientifi c articles devoted to the Russian language and
methods of its teaching.

Gorodok (Cosmonauts’ training centre) for teaching Russian
language to foreign astronauts. Programs of intensive studies
elaborated in PFUR allow to spend only 3 months preparing
candidates for learning technical disciplines related to space
in Russian. Language space program is also successfully imple-
mented by PFUR specialists among “space tourists” who have

In summer 1964, students of Patrice Lumumba Peoples’
Friendship University from 18 diff erent countries of Asia, Af-
rica and Latin America went to the virgin lands of Kazakhstan
for the fi rst time in order to help in the construction of houses

national group “Youth of the Planet”.
The following summer the PFU students from 25 countries of
Asia, Africa and Latin America worked there.
In 1968, PFU founded 6 university groups that worked in dif-

the University in Moscow.

Student KVN (Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted)
PFUR Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted, which
unites members from diff erent subjects of the Russian Feder-
ation, as well as from foreign countries, is a perfect example
of bringing up culture of behavior in a multicultural environ-
ment.
KVN movement in PFUR started in 1996. Decision on holding
annual tournaments for PFUR KVN Championship was made
in 1999. For all years of its existence KVN has formed its sys-
tem with rules and traditions. The University has its own KVN
champions. The most outstanding KVN members were put
down in the Book of Honor of PFUR.
PFUR KVN team has more awards than any other club in the
International KVN Club. It is the only team on the International
KVN Club that has all kinds of medals:
Bronze medal (2003)
Silver medal (2004)
Gold medal (2006)
The most triumphal moment for PFUR KVN team was 2007
KVN Summer cup in Sochi when the team became the Cham-
pion of the Champions.
KVN teams from PFUR participated in International Music
Festivals in Yurmala (Latvia) 10 times. They hold the record for
the highest number of awards of this prestigious Festival. The
fi rst award “Big KiViN in Light” went to the team “Children of
Lumumba” (in 1998), then PFUR KVN team got two awards
“Big KiViN in Dark” (in 2002 and 2004), two awards “Small
KiViN in Gold” (in 2003 and 2005) and the highest prize of the
Festival “Big KiViN in Gold” (in 2006).
The whole collection of prizes of PFUR KVN teams features

in the Moscow league, the First league held in Kazan, Ryazan,
Tyumen, St. Petersburg and Minsk, the Baltics league (Saint
Petersburg), the Northern league (Khanty-Mansyisk), the Euro
league (Minsk) where PFUR KVN team became a champion in

league, the Premier league where “RUDNiK” was a semifi nalist
in 2008, and the Higher KVN league (Moscow) where this team
became a quarterfi nalist in 2009.
In 2011, after 5 years of absence the PFUR KVN team re-
turned to the Music Festival in Yurmala dedicated to the 50th
anniversary of KVN and once again proved its right to call it-
self the best musical team by winning its second “Big KiViN in
Gold”.
The new wave of the KVN movement owes its existence to
the incumbent international PFUR KVN team, winner of the In-
teruniversity tournament for the Cup of Prefect of South-West
administrative district (2012) and holder of the Cups of II and
III Moscow festivals of national humor “Vse svoyi” (“No Strang-
ers”) in 2011 and 2012. After the season of 2012 in the Big
League of KVN “Povolzhie” (cities of Kazan, Ufa, Tolyatti, Che-
boksary) the team became third out of 36 teams who started
in the beginning.
