Department of the Russian language of the Pre-university

faculty headed by E. Motina was the fi rst department estab-

lished at the University. In October 1960, more than 100 pro-

fessors of Russian language started to work in the University.

The Department was divided into sections of Latin America,

South-Eastern Asia, Middle East and Africa and study groups

of international students were formed subject to their majors.

Currently PFUR has 10 departments of Russian language

which teach Russian to Russian and international students.

Russian language is taught by about 300 professors in-

cluding:

20 DSc;

136 PhD;

6 incumbent and corresponding members of state and

public academies of sciences of Russia;

4 honorary workers of higher professional education of the

Russian Federation.

From 2010 to 2014, professors of the Russian language

wrote 500 textbooks and manuals, including 104 with labels

of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Feder-

ation and national academic associations. Textbooks and man-

uals developed at PFUR are widely used in Russian universi-

ties as well as in foreign ones. For instance, the textbook by C.

Khavronina and A. Shirochenskaya “Russian language in exer-

cises” has been used for 50 years and published 70 times in 18

languages.

PFUR specialists in Russian philology participate not only in

academic but also in scientifi c activity as well. For the last 5

years they have prepared 2,500 publications, including:

450 works published in scientifi c journals featured in High-

er Attestation Commission register;

500 publications issued abroad;

45 monographs;

scientifi c articles devoted to the Russian language and

methods of its teaching.

Professors of the Russian language of PFUR maintain close

scientifi c ties with Moscow State University, Russian Language

Institute of RAS, Institute of Linguistics of RAS, Pushkin State

Russian Language Institute, specialists in Russian philology

from Spain, Italy, France, CIS countries, India, China, Sri Lan-

ka and other countries; they also participate in the work of

diff erent public professional organizations: International As-

sociation of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (MA-

PRYAL), Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and

Literature (ROPRYAL) etc.

It is worth mentioning the signifi cant contribution that

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia made to the estab-

lishment of the school of the Russian Language in Zvyozdny

Gorodok (Cosmonauts’ training centre) for teaching Russian

language to foreign astronauts. Programs of intensive studies

elaborated in PFUR allow to spend only 3 months preparing

candidates for learning technical disciplines related to space

in Russian. Language space program is also successfully imple-

mented by PFUR specialists among “space tourists” who have

established by the Ministry of Education of Russia. Today the

testing system is used in 160 universities in Russia and abroad.

In 2009, HRLTCFFC as part of the Russian Test Consortium suc-

cessfully passed the ALTE audit.

From 2010 to 2013, Head testing center tested 13,634 can-

didates for TORFL certifi cate, 29,887 candidates for the Rus-

sian citizenship Certifi cate and 5,753 candidates for work per-

mit Certifi cate in the territory of the Russian Federation. From

2009 to 2013, HRLTCFFC organized and conducted tests for

Construction teams

In summer 1964, students of Patrice Lumumba Peoples’

Friendship University from 18 diff erent countries of Asia, Af-

rica and Latin America went to the virgin lands of Kazakhstan

for the fi rst time in order to help in the construction of houses

and granaries, as well as in harvesting. They named their inter-

national group “Youth of the Planet”.

The following summer the PFU students from 25 countries of

Asia, Africa and Latin America worked there.

In 1968, PFU founded 6 university groups that worked in dif-

ferent parts of USSR and helped to build the new building of

the University in Moscow.

PFU International constructional team existed till 1990.

In 1999, upon the initiative of PFUR students, Rector and

trade union the International constructional team “Meridian of

Friendship” resumed its work.

Starting from 2001, the International constructional team

“Meridian of Friendship” has been working on an all-year basis

and has become a structural division of the University.

In 2008, “Meridian of Friendship” was re-organized and be-

came the Center of youth student building teams “Meridian of

Friendship”.

Student KVN (Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted)

PFUR Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted, which

unites members from diff erent subjects of the Russian Feder-

ation, as well as from foreign countries, is a perfect example

of bringing up culture of behavior in a multicultural environ-

ment.

KVN movement in PFUR started in 1996. Decision on holding

annual tournaments for PFUR KVN Championship was made

in 1999. For all years of its existence KVN has formed its sys-

tem with rules and traditions. The University has its own KVN

champions. The most outstanding KVN members were put

down in the Book of Honor of PFUR.

PFUR KVN team has more awards than any other club in the

International KVN Club. It is the only team on the International

KVN Club that has all kinds of medals:

Bronze medal (2003)

Silver medal (2004)

Gold medal (2006)

The most triumphal moment for PFUR KVN team was 2007

KVN Summer cup in Sochi when the team became the Cham-

pion of the Champions.

KVN teams from PFUR participated in International Music

Festivals in Yurmala (Latvia) 10 times. They hold the record for

the highest number of awards of this prestigious Festival. The

fi rst award “Big KiViN in Light” went to the team “Children of

Lumumba” (in 1998), then PFUR KVN team got two awards

“Big KiViN in Dark” (in 2002 and 2004), two awards “Small

KiViN in Gold” (in 2003 and 2005) and the highest prize of the

Festival “Big KiViN in Gold” (in 2006).

The whole collection of prizes of PFUR KVN teams features

Moscow Cup (won by the team “Children of Lumumba” in

1999), 5 awards of Interuniversity tournament of the South-

West Administrative District Prefect Cup (won by Senior KVN

team in 2001 and 2002, the KVN team RUDNiK in 2007 and

2008 and by Junior KVN team in 2012), the South Administra-

tive District Prefect Cup (won by KVN Second team), Moscow

Mayor Cup, unique Cups from Tyumen, Kazakhstan, the Chech-

en Republic, Prague, as well as certifi cates, diplomas and let-

ters of gratitude.

PFUR KVN teams participated in various Leagues of Inter-

national KVN Union. Almost all PFUR teams have taken part

in the Moscow league, the First league held in Kazan, Ryazan,

Tyumen, St. Petersburg and Minsk, the Baltics league (Saint

Petersburg), the Northern league (Khanty-Mansyisk), the Euro

league (Minsk) where PFUR KVN team became a champion in

2002, the Central Ryazan league where the team “RUDNiK”

became vice-champion in 2007, the Higher Open Ukrainian

57

league, the Premier league where “RUDNiK” was a semifi nalist

in 2008, and the Higher KVN league (Moscow) where this team

became a quarterfi nalist in 2009.

In 2011, after 5 years of absence the PFUR KVN team re-

turned to the Music Festival in Yurmala dedicated to the 50th

anniversary of KVN and once again proved its right to call it-

self the best musical team by winning its second “Big KiViN in

Gold”.

The new wave of the KVN movement owes its existence to

the incumbent international PFUR KVN team, winner of the In-

teruniversity tournament for the Cup of Prefect of South-West

administrative district (2012) and holder of the Cups of II and

III Moscow festivals of national humor “Vse svoyi” (“No Strang-

ers”) in 2011 and 2012. After the season of 2012 in the Big

League of KVN “Povolzhie” (cities of Kazan, Ufa, Tolyatti, Che-

boksary) the team became third out of 36 teams who started

in the beginning.

In 2013, the Junior PFUR team with the support of the Se-

nior team brilliantly made its fi rst appearance in “Dzintari”

concert hall in Yurmala and won “Small KiViN in gold” award.

In December 2013, PFUR team participated in XXV Interna-

tional festival of KVN teams in Sochi and was invited to play in

the Big League of the International KVN Union which means

that the story of KVN in PFUR continues.

versions of the system. Since 1990, new materials arriving

at the library have been registered in the Electronic cata-

logue and the books that came before 1990 were also added

to the catalogue. ‘Automated system of loan’ was launched

and started working at the library in the Main building since

2002. In 2006, the Library started working in the Automated

information library system ‘MARK-SQL’.

In 2008, PFUR Research Library was reorganized into Study

and research information Librarian center (Research library).

The major task of the library is to provide resources for edu-

cation process and scientifi c and research activities. The Cen-

tre assistants carry out informational and educational and

cultural work.

Today total library fund of printed materials is over 1, 800, 000

political needs – these factors necessitated the establishment

of a higher education institution, which would not only train

highly qualifi ed personnel for the countries that have taken

the path of independent development, but also develop the

best educational programs and work with foreign students.

The establishment of Peoples’ Friendship University on the 5th
