Rough work on OMR sheet The OMR or Optical Mark Recognition sheet is not a normal printed paper with bubbles or blocks on them. This paper has a specific purpose because of which it can be read by an OMR system or software when it is scanned with an OMR scanner . In other words, it can be said that the OMR sheet follows a scientific format. Its layout is technically measured and the software is provided with a set of instructions. These factors help the software or system to read the sheet. To fill the OMR sheet, the person has to choose a bubble and darken it with a pen or pencil (as instructed by the examination committee). The OMR system is tuned to capture the dark areas on the sheet. This is how it reads the answers provided by the candidate and then evaluates it. However, it is attuned to recognize marks only on certain areas and finding marks on some other section of the paper can confuse the software. Hence, rough work on the OMR sheet should never be done. You, as a student or candidate, may require doing some rough work to arrive at the right answer, especially in case of mathematics examination. However, never do it on the OMR sheet as this will cause problem in scanning. The OMR reader or software may not be able to understand these marks, leading you to lose points. Hence, always ask for an extra supplement for the rough work. Another thing one must avoid is writing spiritual slogans or religious symbols on the OMR sheet.
