A Moderator• is part of the lesson study team or
someone familiar with the team’s work.
• introduces the team if there are invited guests.
• reiterates the team’s group norms pertaining to discussion.

A Moderator • provides the outline the discussion
agenda.• briefly repeats the team’s goals.• encourages participants to provide
evidence for their observations and comments.
• reminds participants that the focus of the discussion is on learning.

Role and Responsibilities of a Moderator
• Ensures that the session focuses on analysis and discussion instead of merely description.
• Keeps track of time.• Ensures the discussion is not dominated
by any observer.• Reminds the teacher to wait to respond. • Conducts a free-flowing discussion.

How does a KO look like?• Effective knowledgeable others possess a “learning”
mindset– Understand that lesson study is a learning
process;– Recognise that despite possessing certain
expertise, a knowledgeable other must respect others as equals and be open to their own learning.

• Effective knowledgeable others possess the ability to select key ideas to focus on for discussion

Role of a KO• Provides a different perspective when
reacting to the lesson study of the group;
• Provides information about subject matter content, new ideas or reforms;
• Shares the work of other lesson study groups.
• Encourages teachers to persevere in the lesson study.
• Volunteers to teach the research lesson.

Benefits of having a KO• Develops the knowledge base of teachers
while working collaboratively with them as peers and co-learners.
• With its teacher-led and student-focused approach, lesson study can be a tool for helping researchers and other external providers – in the role of knowledgeable others – integrate educational research more effectively into practice.
