WHAT IS ROBOT ?

A robot can be defined as a programmable, self-controlled device consisting of electronic, electrical, or mechanical units.

Page 4: Robot & robotics

HISTORY OF ROBOT :

The first uses of modern robots were in factories as industrial robots which allowed production without the need for human assistance.

Digitally controlled industrial robots  have been built since the 1960s.

In Renaissance Italy, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) sketched plans for a humanoid robot around 1495.

Human-robot interaction:

Robots will eventually be capable of communicating with humans through speech, gestures, and facial expressions.

TOPIO ("TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot"):

TOPIO ("TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot") is a bipedal humanoid robot designed to play table tennis against a human being.

It has been developed since 2005 by TOSY, a robotics firm in Vietnam.

It was publicly demonstrated at the Tokyo International Robot Exhibition (IREX) on November 28, 2007.

ADVANTAGE:Spying on people.

Giving us information that humans can't get.

Working at places 24/7.

They can perform tasks faster than humans and more consistently and accurately.

They can entertain us and help us in certain tasks.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGE OF ROBOT:

Page 9: Robot & robotics

DISADVANTAGE OF ROBOT:

1) People can lose jobs in factories

2) It needs a supply of power

3) It needs maintenance to keep it running

4) It costs money to make or buy a robot.

WHAT IS ROBOTICS ?

Design, construction, and use of machines (robots) to perform tasks done traditionally by human beings.

Robots are widely used in such industries as automobile manufacture to perform simple repetitive tasks.

Artificial intelligence (AI):

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software, and the branch of computer science that develops machines and software with intelligence.

AI research is highly technical and specialised, and is deeply divided into subfields that often fail to communicate with each other.

DEVELOPMENT OF ROBOTICS IN INDIA:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is examining the possibility of establishing a robotic set-up or unmanned mission on the moon.

Chandrayaan I and II, the basic objective of the project is to examine whether a robotic set-up can find the existence of water, from which we can get hydrogen and oxygen to use as propellants.

Flying: Two robot snakes. Left one has 64 motors (with 2 degrees of freedom per segment), the right one 10.A modern passenger airliner is essentially a flying robot, with two humans to manage it.

Tracked robots:

TYPES OF USES IN ROBOTICS:

Tank tracks provide even more traction than a six-wheeled robot. Tracked wheels behave as if they were made of hundreds of wheels, therefore are very common for outdoor and military robots.

Summer robotics camp:

Several national summer camp programs include robotics as part of their core curriculum, including Digital Media Academy, RoboTech, and Cybercamps.

Employment:

Robotics is an essential component in many modern manufacturing environments.

Sailing:

Sailboat robots have also been developed in order to make measurements at the surface of the ocean. The two main competitions of sailboat robots are WRSC and Sailbot.

Career training:

Universities offer bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in the field of robotics.

ROBONAUT 2 AN INDIAN ROBOT :

The space agency is building Robonaut 2, a robot designed to eventually help astronauts by taking over some of their duties on the International Space Station.
