2. Central America

Geographical features• Central America is an Isthmus- a narrow

piece of land surrounded by water on two sides and connects two large landmasses.

Natural Resources

- coffee

- Sugar cane

- cacao

The Caribbean• Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and

Hispaniola are the 4 major Islands.• Hispaniola is made up of two countries:

Haiti and the Dominican Republic.• Haiti’s main problem is Deforestation-

the cutting down of trees for another use

3. South America

Geographical Features• Andes Mountains-The very large

mountains that travel down the western coast of South America.

• Amazon Basin- This contains the largest rainforest in the world. Rainforest- a large evergreen forest with a lot of rainfall.

• Amazon River- The second longest river in the world.

• The people around the Amazon river have built a dam that helps them make power using the water called hydroelectricity.

• Pampas- flat grassland regions in Argentina. Raising cattle.

What affects Climate?

1. Elevation- Height above sea level

2. Location- Countries closer to the equator (warmer)

3. Wind Patterns- winds move cold air from N. + S. Pole to equator, and warm air from equator to N. + S. Pole.

One-Resource Economy

• One-Resource Economy- an economy that depends on one resource or crop.

• Why? – sometimes the one resource is destroyed and can hurt the economy

• Diversify- add variety • By----- adding more resources!
