RESEARCH TASKRESPONSE TO THE BRIEF

Which brief have you Chosen and why?

For my production I have chosen to do a print of a rock music magazine.

A print will allow me to reflect my visual skills further, with the use of color and shot type, for instance a close up which shows a features which some may not see in a concert . My aim is to show how a magazine can inspire just as much as a film.

I also chose to do this genre because it is a genre of music I personally enjoy so I can share my passion. I focus to make it relatable to other people who are fans of the music. This will be to suit a target audience and hopefully make it larger.

I have chosen to work independently as a challenge so I can explore my creative skills in editing, genre research and consumer importance. This is because I hope to work in promotion in the future so this can help me gain experience.

I chose to do a print because it is better suited to my skills, rather than filming which I don’t think I will enjoy. I feel I will achieve a better grade because I read a range of magazines, from fashion to music to nature so I can gain inspiration from what I like to read myself and put my own take on them.

WHAT ARE YOUR INITIAL IDEAS ON WHAT YOU MAY PRODUCE?

The genre I will focus upon will be rock, this is because it is a genre I personally enjoy and many of my favorite bands belong in this genre for example; Muse. As music is one of my passions, I want to make this apparent through the bold texts, the use of exclamation marks and bold colors such as royal blue which will attract the audience. I chose this too because I will enjoy researching bands of this genre. I aim to contact a local band for an interview and this will help me as a primary source, I will focus on a young band to suit my target audience, which I have explained on the next slide. I feel rock needs an update as well as keeping its original roots, in this I will use a different shot type which differentiates against the cliché’ long shot, I would prefer to do a titled frame which could add to the rebellion feeling rock brings.

TARGET AUDIENCE Leading from this, my target audience will range from 14-25. This

is so I can aim for young people as rock music is a genre that is fading due to new revolutions such as house. My aim is to encourage people to be influenced by the talented musicians who write their own music. This could inspire a generation to bring back music which has meaning. I also chose this audience so I could possibly use slang to make it seem relatable. Using sex symbols, will attract both male and female readers to read and red could be a symbol of the lust and passion.

Another benefit of this target audience is that teenagers are experimental, so this could encourage them to try new things,( new music) they also copy one and another on the latest trends. If one person enjoys this, it could have a chain reaction effect and therefore increase the popularity. Rock musicians are very alternative and could encourage people to dye their hair crazy colors or get tattoos, this shows the influence of creativity. It could help young people find themselves and their own image.

It could encourage young people to attend music festivals where they can learn independence and the experience of mud, music and madness. This would all support the rock music industry.

INSPIRATION

Kerrang Vam: Me, Myself and DieKerrang magazine is one of my biggest

inspirations. It is ‘the worlds largest weekly selling magazine’ and has been set up since 1981. They are still popular today from their constancy in editing skills, to idolize rock stars. Their target is a ranges from young to old and this is why they are so popular. I have focused on the difference between each feature for example when they use an older band such as The Rolling Stones; this would not appeal to teenagers today. Therefore I need to focus on how the choice of theme and the people I focus will change attitudes.

This is a CD cover for Vam and this is a more low key example however the techniques they used have influenced my ideas. The use of makeup to create a skull like effect on the cover highlighted the darker side of rock which creates a classic feel. Even the title of the album, using the rule of three lures the audience in because it is quick and snappy. This is the aim I hope to achieve from a short, witty title which will appeal more.
