Camera Work

The extract opens with an birds eye view shot of the disabled and able bodied brothers’ bedroom, which acts as an establishing shot. This helps to immediately display the division between the boys as there is a great distance between them.

When discussing Mise en Scene

Make sure that you use the word:

•ConnotationsAs in “The colour red has connotations of danger” or “The boys body position connotes anger.”

Mise En Scene

Through the use of mise en scene the room has been arranged so that the disabled brothers side of the room appears colourful and messy which connotes that he is carefree and happy where as the abled bodied brothers side is grey and organised connoting dull and rigid. This further highlights a difference between them, although the seemingly carefree existence of the disabled brother goes against the stereotypical ideas of disability.

Sound

• Make sure to reference diegetic/non-diegetic sound.

• Try to reference synchronous/asynchronous sounds, ambient sounds where applicable

Sound

• The scene features a voiceover from the abled bodied brother in which he discusses deciding to kill his brother. This is juxtaposed against the friendly non-diegetic music which further highlights the contrasts being established in the scene.

Editing

• Most scenes are going to use continuity editing to help keep a clear narrative. Mentioning this is an easy point to make.

• Refer to cuts in each paragraph. Eg “The clip then cuts to the next scene.”

• Outside of that it is just making sure that you know the terminology, e.g cutaway, jump cuts etc

Editing

• Towards the end of the scene it cuts to a black and white montage of shots used to reflect the abled bodied brothers ideas discussed in his voiceover. The series of images start with an explosion which connotes the brothers anger. The quickly cut images are processes of evolution and show how the able bodies brother looks at life as survival of the fittest and that his disabled brother is weak, which is a stereotype of disability.
