You are going to be marked on…
• Terminology (10marks)• Examples (20marks)• Explanation/Ananlysis (20marks)
• So basically – What do they use? Where is it used in the scene and for what reason have they used it?
What?Where?Why?
Try that with the first part of the extract.
Write some notes on what shots/editing techniques/ sound and mise en scene is used in the first 40 seconds of the extract.

Ariel shot = Establishing shot.Pan around able brother. Close up
shot and zoom on disabled one
In the bedroom scene…
Shows division between boys – far
apart and positioned differently.
Able brother looks to be watching him. Disabled made to seem vulnerable
Non diegetic music,
voiceover
Colours and organisation used in both boys sides of
the room.
Cuts to montage of
shots in black and white
First shot of an explosion is used to represent the building anger in the able brother. Shots all link to
evolution – Survival of the
fittest.
Establishes able brothers feelings towards disbaled
one. Contrasts also highlighted by
difference of non diegetic sound to what he is talking
about
Division between the brothers.
Disabled brother is made to seem vibrant and lively
while able brother seems dull and rigid.
Now over to you
• We will watch it two more times. • However now you are going to watch it again
as a pair.• In your pair you must decide which two areas
(mise en scene, sound, editing, camera work)• You must fill out the relevant part of the sheet
and then feedback to your partner.

How to write your answer
Structure
Chronologically work through the different scenes, analysing the clip, pointing out how these representations are formed. Focus each paragraph on the individual scenes within the extract. In each paragraph look to comment on camerawork, mise en scene, sound and editing.Make sure to point out the use of any stereotypes or countertypes seen.

Camera Work
The extract opens with an birds eye view shot of the disabled and able bodied brothers’ bedroom, which acts as an establishing shot. This helps to immediately display the division between the boys as there is a great distance between them.
What
Where
Why
When discussing Mise en Scene
Make sure that you use the word:
•ConnotationsAs in “The colour red has connotations of danger” or “The boys body position connotes anger.”

Division between the brothers.

while able brother seems dull and rigid.
Mise En Scene
Through the use of mise en scene the room has been arranged so that the disabled brothers side of the room appears colourful and messy which connotes that he is carefree and happy where as the abled bodied brothers side is grey and organised connoting dull and rigid. This further highlights a difference between them, although the seemingly carefree existence of the disabled brother goes against the stereotypical ideas of disability.
What Where
Why
Sound
• Make sure to reference diegetic/non-diegetic sound.
• Try to reference synchronous/asynchronous sounds, ambient sounds where applicable

Sound
• The scene features a voiceover from the abled bodied brother in which he discusses deciding to kill his brother. This is juxtaposed against the friendly non-diegetic music which further highlights the contrasts being established in the scene.
What
Why
Editing
• Most scenes are going to use continuity editing to help keep a clear narrative. Mentioning this is an easy point to make.
• Refer to cuts in each paragraph. Eg “The clip then cuts to the next scene.”
• Outside of that it is just making sure that you know the terminology, e.g cutaway, jump cuts etc

Editing
• Towards the end of the scene it cuts to a black and white montage of shots used to reflect the abled bodied brothers ideas discussed in his voiceover. The series of images start with an explosion which connotes the brothers anger. The quickly cut images are processes of evolution and show how the able bodies brother looks at life as survival of the fittest and that his disabled brother is weak, which is a stereotype of disability.
Where What
Why
Over to you
• You are now going to write a paragraph for the next scene in the kitchen.
• Use what, where and why• Write about – camera work, mise en scene,
sound and editing.• Use as much terminology as you can.
