The Meaning of Sin

Sin can be defined as human actions that break

God’s instructions and will. Every single individual

has obligation and responsibility based on his own

religion. Indifference of these obligations and

responsibility can be considered as sin.

Islam’s View on Sin

The Meaning of Sin

The concept of sin in the Qur’an is presented using many different words

and examples. Without going into all the technical terms, sin is presented as not

living up to God’s standard, “missing the mark” as it were, failing to do well

enough. It is presented as making mistakes or unintentionally straying from the

right path.

The Kind of Sin In Islam

• Minor Sin

Minor sin is sin no penalty (had) in the world, not cursed by Allah and His

Prophet, and no statements are not mukmin.

• Major Sin

Major sin is any act that the perpetrator threatened with hellfire, damnation,

or the wrath of gods in the afterlife or be punished in the world.

• Adultery eyes

• Adultery oral

• Adultery heart

• Speak ill of another person

• Shirk

• Munafik

• Fasik

• Kufr (unbelievers)

• Kill

• Disobedient to parents

• Adultery

• Accusing faithful woman

• Eating illegitimate food

• Stealing, robbing, torturing

people

Forgiveness in Islam

According to Islam, one can be forgiven of sins through genuine tawbah.

Genuine tawbah means :

• The person must confess their sin directly to Allah sincerely,

• They should then repent of that sin sincerely,

• Itending to never do it again, and

• They should then trust in the promises of Allah’s forgiveness in the Qur’an.

Hinduism’s View on Sin

The Meaning of Sin

In Hinduism, sin is an act that violates the rule purity as the Lord Hyang

Widhi Wasa. The sin can occur in previous birth or in the present birth.

The Kind of Sin in Hinduism

In Hinduism there are also major sin and minor sin but the details are not as completeas Islam, because in Hinduism the description of kind of sin more focused discussabout sin in popular problem, such as:

• Theft

• Gambling, betting, and the like

• Corruption and Bribery

• Robbery, hold-up and the like

• Improvident

According to Hinduism, person’s sin can be forgiven with various ways :

• Yadnya

• Satyam

• Dharma

• Tapa

Buddhist’s View on Sin

The Meaning of Sin

In Buddhism there is no sin apart from avidya, not understanding the full

meaning and implication of the Four Noble Truths or a fundamental

misunderstanding of the nature of reality. In general, Buddhism

illustrates intentions as the cause of karma, either good, bad, or neutral.

Classification of Karma, according to different functions:

• Reproductive Karma.

• Supportive Karma.

• Obstructive Karma or Counteractive Karma.

• Destructive (Upaghataka) Karma.

Classification of Karma, according to the priority of effect:

• Weighty (Garuka) Karma.

• Proximate (Asanna) Karma or Death-Proximate karma.

• Habitual (Accina) Karma.

• Reserve or Cumulative (Katatta) Karma.

Forgiveness In Buddhist

In Buddhism, forgiveness is seen as a practice to prevent harmful thoughts

from causing havoc on one’s mental well-being. Buddhism recognizes that

feelings of hatred and ill-will leave a lasting effect on our mind karma.

Instead, Buddhism encourages the cultivation of thoughts that leave a

wholesome effect. When resentments have already arisen, the Buddhist view

is to calmly proceed to release them by going back to their roots. Buddhism

centers on release from delusion and suffering through meditation and

receiving insight into the nature of reality.

Christianity’s(Catholic and Protestant) View on

Sin

The Meaning of Sin

In Christianity, sin is believed and viewed to terms that can affect to

relationship between God and human. Sin can seen to refusal to God’s plan

and opposite to God’s will.

The Kind of Sin in Christianity (Catholic and

Protestant)

• Original Sin

Original sin is the sin inherited from Adam and Hawa

• Deeds Sin

Sins committed by an individual human being that concerned, either

intentionally or unintentionally, and done through the heart / mind / eye /

words and deeds.

Forgiveness in Catholic

• Baptism

Baptism was given to take away the sin inherited from Adam (original sin) and any sins we

personally committed before baptism.

• The Sacrament of Penance

The Sacrament of Penance is the method of the Church by which individual men and

women may confess sins committed after baptism and have them absolved by a priest.

• The Catholic receives sacramental graces

Forgiveness in Protestant

• Baptism

Baptism was given to take away the sin inherited from Adam (original sin)

and any sins we personally committed before baptism.

• The people that want to forgiveness must pray to God and they must to do

good attitude to God and other people when they belived God will forgive

them and God does not forget them.
