REHABILITATING MATURE OIL FIELDS 25 – 27 July 2016 | Kuala Lumpur

The rehabilitation of mature fields can be one of the most profitable activities in the current low oil price environment. A fair amount uncertainty and risk is removed, as the geology and remaining reserves are known with a high degree of certainty, and the well has already been drilled. However each field is unique and no one solution will cover all conditions. Rehabilitating or improving flow from mature oil fields requires a good integrated working knowledge of the geology, the reservoir and the existing well design.

About the course: This 3 day course will provide you with the logic and tools to guide the decision making in the direction as to the methodology to bring the field to its full potential, or in some cases whether it should be abandoned totally. The course will briefly cover the inflow and outflow of fluids from the well, and the impact of the change of reservoir parameters with time, followed by an introduction into primary, secondary and tertiary recovery. The topic of enhanced recovery will not be the focus of this course; the sessions will instead concentrate on

improving primary recovery from the field by:

Examining various causes of declining productivity, and ways and means of diagnosing the cause.

Discussing various rig and non-rig interventions to remedy the diagnosed problem.

Presenting a simplistic method of prioritising the workover activity for a large number of under-

performing wells.

Introducing an investigative method to examine if any undrained oil remains untapped.

Armed with this knowledge, each well in turn will be able to be examined as to what needs to be performed –

remediate, recomplete on another reservoir, introduce or change artificial lift method, use well as future

injection well (e.g for enhanced recovery, water disposal, or gas storage) or abandon.

What will you be able to achieve after attending this training course:

Understand the problems associate with produced fluids, and interactions between these and introduced fluids

Understand the causes of formation damage and its importance to the productivity of a well.

Understand the various categories of “problem wells” and be able to choose appropriate methodology to diagnose the cause of the problem,

Understand the capabilities and limitations of various well intervention methods.

Learn how to compile the required data into an easily understandable format.

Learn how to prepare a well re-entry proposal, and how to allocate priority ranking to the action proposed.

REHABILITATING MATURE OIL FIELDS 25 – 27 July 2016 | Kuala Lumpur

3 DAY COURSE AGENDA

DAY 1

UNDERSTANDING THE FIELD

Before embarking on the rehabilitation of a mature oil field, it is important to have a thorough understanding of

the geology and structure of the accumulation, and the existence of any barriers to flow that may exist, as well as

the production history of individual wells on a reservoir basis.

The properties of the reservoir fluids play an important part in the final planning process, as does the clay

mineralogy of each reservoir.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

Graphical presentation of production parameters allows prediction of available recovery with a high degree of

confidence. Various methods of forecasting remaining recoverable reserves per producing zone per well are

presented.

Depicting drained areas of each well on reservoir maps gives an insight of potential undrained sections of the

reservoir.

COMPILING THE DATA

Demonstrate how a simple table showing well penetrations of petroleum bearing zones gives an overview of the

scope for increasing production, and the effort required to do so.

UNDERSTANDING THE PERFORMANCE OF WELLS

An understanding of the fundamentals of inflow from the reservoir to the wellbore and outflow from the bottom

of the well to the surface is essential to the planning process.

Radial flow through a porous medium is explained, and the impact of reduction of permeability near the wellbore

is demonstrated. The concept of skin is explained.

The effects of various parameters on the flow through the tubing and flowline are discussed.

DAY 2

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH PRODUCED FLUIDS

This topic will give an appreciation of the problems encountered during the producing life of a field, and an

understanding of the causes of these problems.

The problems are caused by the physical change within one fluid, interaction between fluids, reaction between

fluid and steel, velocity, and bacteria.

Participants will be able to predict the possible occurrence of scale, emulsion, wax, asphaltine, hydrates,

corrosion, erosion, finesand gain an understanding of the methods available to mitigate these problems.

CAUSES OF REDUCTION OF PRODUCTIVITY

Every activity in the life of a well can cause a reduction of the potential flow rate due to reduction in permeability

of the reservoir rock. The concept of absolute and relative permeability is explained, and the causes of both are

described

FORMATION DAMAGE

Causes of formation damage by drilling, completion, production, workover and stimulation are described, and

precautions to be taken to avoid or minimise the occurrence are given.

DAY 3

WELL MAINTENANCE/RESTORATION BASICS

Any well not behaving as expected or is shut in is described as a problem well. Various indications for a well to be

categorised as a possible problem are introduced. The action that follows is similar to a medical condition:

investigate the problem, diagnose the cause, and perform the appropriate action to remedy the problem.

After investigation, the options open are: do nothing (nothing wrong), investigate further, remedy without using a

rig, repair using a rig, recomplete on another zone, use the well other than as a producer (i.e. as an injection well),

or abandon the well.

INVESTIGATING AND DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM

Methods available to investigate behaviour of a well vary from a record search through sophisticated downhole

logging techniques to interference testing.

Various tools and techniques are presented and discussed.

CREATING ACTION PLANS

Equipment available for well intervention is introduced, and advantages/limitations addressed.

Each well must then be examined to determine what action may be required, and a table compiled to give a

visual indication of the status of the well, the potential resources available, and how to access these resources.

This topic demonstrates how to compile the action plan.

PREPARING THE INTERVENTION PROPOSAL

A template for a proposal is presented which is the precursor of a detailed operation programme. The proposal

will contain all the data required to prepare the programme.

It will also give a high and low forecast of:- the increase in production, the time to perform the job, and the

associated costs.

With these estimates, a simple method of allocating a ranking value is presented.

Wells can now be programmed and equipment allocated to give the best possible chance of a successful

outcome.

About your Expert Trainer: Paul Winchester

Paul has more than 40 years’ experience in all aspects of drilling and production gained from 17 years with Shell

worldwide in Production Engineering, 2 years as Field Production Manager in Central Australia with CSR Petroleum, and 2

years as Chief Petroleum Engineer with the Bureau of Mineral Resources (Canberra). Since then he has worked on many

diverse projects around SE Asia, mainly technical audits or field development feasibility and planning.

With his 40 years of experience worldwide, it has enabled him to see the big picture whilst taking into account the nuts

and bolts, but not being blinded by them. Frequently small, seemingly unrelated items have a large impact on the

outcome of a production plan. This has provided him with the ability to quickly assess situations, identify strengths and

weaknesses, propose improvements, programme actions, and supervise operations. His speciality is production

optimisation, field development/redevelopment/rehabilitation or abandonment, and technical audits, and considers

himself the quintessential trouble-shooter. Notable successes were Shell’s Odidi field Nigeria, BP-Arco (Indonesia)

offshore oil fields, Focus (Myanmar) oil fields, as well as many smaller fields in Australia and Asia. Most of these fields

achieved gains of 50 to 100%.

Paul graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Mining Engineering from Nottingham University, is an active (25 year) member of

SPE, and is a past Chartered Professional Engineer.
