What is a Mind Map?
• A mind map is a diagram used to represent: – Words– Ideas– Tasks– Or other items linked to and arranged
around a central theme.
• In a Mind Map, information is structured in a way that resembles closely how the brain actually works.
• Tony Buzan states, ““…the ultimate organizational thinking tool –the Swiss army knife of the brain! (Tony Buzan, “the ultimate book of mind maps”, pg. 6)
Let’s Try an Experiment!
• I will now give you 15 words.
• Do NOT write the words down. Just listen.
• When I finish saying the words, I’ll ask you to write down as many as you can remember.
• Then we’ll get to the fun part!
What Happened?
• We often can’t trust our own brains!
• Memories are not always real.
• Has this ever happened to you?
• Mind maps help us organize our thoughts in ways that make sense.
• Cave Drawings
• Tree Brains. Branches = Dendrites
• Maps = Guides
How Does Our Brain Work?
• Helps you to think visually
• Create better learning experiences

Some Additional Benefits of Mind Maps
Understanding Associations Using Mind Maps
• Central idea: – What word best describes
your main topic? Put it in the middle of the page.
• Main branches: – Start branching from the
central object preferably with a color to each branch
– Each branch represents association to the central idea
– Make 4 or 5 main branches attached to the central idea, each with a word and/or an image that best describes a main idea
– Emphasize important keywords
• Now put any words that occur to you on smaller branches attached to the appropriate main branch.
• If you need to, just put them in empty space and attach them later by drawing lines.
• Now put any images that occur to you on or near the smaller branches attached to the appropriate main branch.
The Mind Map Technique
• Use keywords
• Use images and Color
• Be clear
• Use arrows to link ideas
• Review your mind map…later
