New Amsterdam was a 17th-century Dutch settlement, which served as the seat of the colonial government in New Netherland. The factorij became a settlement outside of Fort Amsterdam. Situated on the strategic, fortifiable southern tip of the island, the fort was meant to defend the Dutch West India Company's fur trade operations in the North River. It became a provincial extension of the Dutch Republic as of 1624 and was designated the capital of the province in 1625.

Burt Silverman, a budding American painter, met Emil Goldfus in the winter of 1954, in the elevator at Ovington Studios, a building where he and many of his friends and professional colleagues rented space on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
Emil Goldfus, a kindly, unassuming, retired photofinisher and amateur painter, became good friends with Burt Silverman and his colleagues, and spent 3 years working and creating together.
Silverman gained some popularity, but Goldfus never emerged into prominence. His paintings were never sold, nor were they ever published in any magazine.

Surtsey Island, was formed in 1967 due to a volcanic eruption, 20 miles south of Iceland. Rather than letting tourists traipse around the virgin isle, scientists wanted to keep Surtsey free from human interference, so they could monitor the colonisation process of new land by plants and animals. The rocky outcrop has since revealed many natural secrets, prompting Unesco to declare it a World Heritage Site.
When the labyrinthine caves of Lascaux, France were discovered in 1940, they were found, much to the delight of archaeologists, to contain some of the world’s best-preserved Stone Age art, some of which was thought to be 17,300 years old. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The subterranean art gallery swiftly became one of the Dordogne’s top attractions, but in 1955 experts warned that carbon dioxide, heat and humidity brought into the caves by tourists was ruining the rock paintings.

Somnath Temple was where the Syamantak Mani was kept. It was one of the few existing stones which were historically referred to have been the Philosopher’s Stone. It had magnetic powers which supposedly kept the idol suspended in mid-air.

Radiation is a part of the natural world, and so things made with natural materials often contain radioactive elements. In the case of X, the natural material is granite. To begin with, the granite in X includes feldspar, which contains potassium. In any given supply of potassium there is a certain amount of the isotope potassium-40. The isotope breaks down two different ways. Of the two, the electron-capture is more damaging, as it is a process that sends out a high-energy gamma ray.
Granite is also sprinkled with thorium-232, which decays by sending out an alpha particle and another gamma ray. Granite doesn't have a lot of uranium overall, but it does have a greater concentration of uranium than most other natural stones.

During the mid 1900s, when the World War II was going on, the British referred to the Egyptians as “wogs”.

A spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site, the X, was ordered to be built by Ivan the Terrible to mark the 1552 capture of the city of Kazan. It is said that Ivan had the architects blinded to ensure that they would never design something as beautiful as this building.

Maultaschen is a specialty food of Swabia, a region in the southwestern part of Germany. It consists of pasta dough filled with minced meat, spinach, onions and bread crumbs, and seasoned with different spices, including salt and pepper. They are similar to mandu, ravioli, Chinese wontons, Jewish kreplach, and pierogies, although they tend to be larger than any of these, at about eight by five centimeters for each maultasche.
