Brown vs Board of Education

• Before the modern era, Brown vs Board of Education ruled against legal segregation in public schools

• It is difficult to say that the nation adhered to this Supreme Court decision when we see minority students treated unequally in integrated schools or when minority students attend all-minority schools

• Re-segregating of Schools kids zoned away by high-performing elementary school – due to race

De Facto Segregation• The neighborhood you live often determines the high school you go

to neighborhoods are segregated, usually with all-black minority and all-Latino minority living in poorer neighborhoods. This puts the minorities at a educational disadvantage, “perpetuating educational inequality”.

Statistics• On 2003 National Assessment of Educational Progress, just 40

percent of black 4th graders scored at or above the "basic" level in reading, compared with 75 percent of white students. At the 8th grade level, 54% of black students scored at or above basic, compared with 83% of white students. Just 51% of black students graduate from high school; the graduation rate among white students is 72% (Friedman)

• the idea of "tracking" students were implemented to protect white kids from "ill prepared" black kids (Friedman)

• A majority of black students score below the basic level in five out of seven subject areas on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests, compared to only about 20 percent of white students (Greenblatt)
