1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I did research on how music magazines

usually set out there layout and looking at

the codes and conventions.

One of the codes and conventions was

the main image. This is the most

dominant and supreme image. Main

feature article images are used to show

who the main feature is in the magazine

and if it is your favourite artist you would

likely buy the magazine to read the article.

The Masthead is another code and

convention. They are used to engage

the target audience. It is usually place

at the top of the magazine so that when

placed on shelves in a shop you are

able to see it if it is stood behind

another magazine.

I chose the font because I thought that it

was suitable to my genre and it is easy

and simple enough to read.

Freebies are often used to attract

and lure the audience into buying

your magazine. That is why I

decided to use one on my magazine

cover.

The Headline is usually between the bottom and the

middle of the page. It often is a band name that

goes with your main image in large font and is

followed by an Anchorage which is placed together

with the headline. My anchorage shows a quote

saying ‘people say god is in your heart…but the

devil is in mine’ This kind of links to the band name I

made up as the name is ‘Satan's’ child and it shows

a rebellious attitude which suits my genre.

Secondary Lead I added a secondary lead

image to show an inside article. It is place at

the left side third so if the magazine is place

on the shelves one behind the other all the

way along it will stand out to the audience

and you can get an idea of what the article is

about before they read the text/caption.

The Cover Line shows what is

inside the magazine issue.

They are just quick and short

and are followed by a caption of

more detail underneath.

The Exclusive can hook the reader

into buying the magazine. It makes

them think that they can not read,

hear about or get this anywhere

else.

These images show what

pictures are inside the

magazine. Underneath or next

to each picture has a caption

that says something that is

related to the articles.

The main image is the largest

image. It is large because it is

representing the main article of

the magazine issue.

The main reason you have a

contents is to direct you to the

pages you want to look at. I split

each of the pages into categories

such as ‘On the cover’, ‘Gigs’ and

‘reviews’ etc. so it is easier to find

the page you are looking for.

The editorial is usually added to a

magazine that is written by the

editor of the magazine and is

followed by their signature to say

that they wrote it.

The smaller

images show

live action of

satan's child.

The smaller

images are

the pictures

from other

pages of the

magazine

that might

not be your

main article.

The title or heading that

is with the main image of

the page.

Throughout my research, I have found that magazines

usually have a ‘house style’. Following on from this, I have

used that information and created my own house style. I have

kept the same colours throughout the magazine. The colours

of the magazine contain of: Red, Black, Yellow and White.

This is usually the kinds of colours usually used for a rock

genre.

The Font is also something that has been kept the same or

similar to make it look more professional.

The Heading is the large writing at

the top of the article. It is used to

draw the reader in. It is made to stand

out to your reader so they will want to

read your article.

The Exclusive (again like on the

cover) it is used to make the

viewer think that they can’t read

this anywhere else and makes

them want to read the article.

If the reader enjoys this

magazine and want to read

it regularly then this banner

has been placed here to

inform them that they can

This image is the most

dominant image on the

page it stands out and is

used to make the audience

want to read the article.

The inset shots are

showing images in action.

The main article is

the most important

thing on this page. It

is what the

magazine readers

main interest to read

in the magazine.

By looking at

examples of main

articles you realise

that they are written

in columns.

The quote is linked the main image on the

page and is sometimes taken from the

main article. It is a quote from the main

feature of the article.

Pull Quotes are quotes

said within the article

itself. They are used to

show what the artist

has said and they tend

to stand out in bigeer

letters from the rest of

the article

This is an advertisement that is

advertising a brand new album

from a rock band. Music

Magazines often add

advertisements somewhere

within the magazine.

2. How does your media product represent particular social

groups?

I did research about my audience. I took a questionnaire finding out information about their personality,

likes, dislikes, social class and interests. This way I could create a better understanding of who I was

making the magazine for and I would be able to adapt it to their interests so that I could promote and

sell.

Knowing who my target audience was, I could then decide on the right codes and conventions that

would work well to communicate with the readers. The first code and convention I decided to look at

was the colour palette. Colours can have meanings to them so I had to think (knowing that I was aiming

at a young teenage group that was interested in rock) about what colours would work the best that

would have meaning and suit the rock genre. The main colour that I thought about was red. This was

because I thought about blood, anger and violence and in rock concerts you can sort of feel and see

these things around you. Then the yellow and the black were the next set of colours to be used and this

was mainly because of the fact they worked really well together and rock magazine tend to use these

colours. This also started to create my own house style.

Moving on, I then had to think about the other codes and conventions including my photography

and how I was going to use my models to communicate with my social group. So I thought about

the pose, the costume, the expressions, the props, the mode of address, the camera shot and

angle.

The photograph to the right, is the photo I used for my front cover of my magazine and this is an

example of the photography I have done. I decided on indirect mode of address, a bass guitar as a

prop, his clothing is dark and he is posing with the bass guitar as if he is playing it. I decided on

these items and positioning's because when working together it gave it a rock look that worked well

as the front cover and my genre.

The clothing was one of the main things that I researched about. I thought that if you wanted the

photography to look professional and be well suited then you would have make sure that your

model was wearing suitable clothing. That is why I made sure before the photo shoot to check

whether or not I found it suitable. As it was dark I thought it would work well when coming to use it

on the magazine.

This image shows the different

colours that had been used in

my music magazine.
