• Quadragesimo Anno- in the 40th year
• issued by Pope Pius XI
• May 15,1931
• Ethical implication of the social and economic order
• he decribes the major dangers for human freedom and dignity arising from unrestrained capitalism and totalitarian communism.
• he calls it based on the principle of solidarity and subsidiarity.

Capital and Labour
Ethical Mandate:– the church considers it a perversion of
industrial society.
Three elements in determining fair wage.
1.workers family responsibilities

Social Order
• INDUSTRIALIZATION– A society of individuals became a mass and
class society.– the pope demands more solidarity between
employers and employees.
Problem of capitalismdangers for small and medium size interprises
who have insufficient access to capital markets.they are destroyed by larger once.Pope Pius stated that "we would be chained
slaves of individual interest" because of capital interst.
Communism and Socialism
• Pope pius condemned communism and social condition.
Three themes:
1.Ownership and right to property
2.Social justice and social charity
3.Subsidiarity and civil society
Ownership and Right to Property
• "the creator himself has given man the right of private ownership not only that individuals may be able to provide for themself and thier families but also the good which the creator destined for the entire family of mankind".
• the right of property itself is circumscribed by the necessities of social living.
Social Justice and Social Charity
• Consiquences of unrestrained capitalism – exploitation of the working poor– the impoverishment of rural work house– unemployment and disparity of wealth
economic dictatorship – the fight to gain supremacy over the state – social charity not just social justice must be
characterizing feature of modern society
Subsidiarity and Civil Society
• supreme authority of the state was to let local comminities handle matters appropriate to them.
• Pope Pius called for the constitution of organizations.
• he calls for engagement on the reconstruction of social order.
