Q1. In What Ways Does Your Media

Product use, develop or challenge forms

and conventions of real media

products?

Page 2: Q1convewntions

Mise En SceneThe Vivid Hollow (the band in our music video) are an in the musical genre of female fronted

alternative rock therefore we researched the type of music videos professionals bands in that

genre have and the type of image they have.

We found that the female lead singer is generally in the middle and in the forefront of photos so

we followed this convention when taking photos for our digipack.

Location

We decided that would have the band do a performance and a have an ongoing concept/

storyline along side which it keeps cutting to as this is a common convention for music

videos.

We picked an outdoor location underneath a bridge on a railway and the grey skies and

dark contrast fit with the conventions of the alternative music genre.

Locations

Monster by Paramore : (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoTEnaAI9Fo&ob=av2e)

In this video we liked the derelict location and the idea of the band being trapped in a

room. Below is a screenshot of a location in the Paramore Video next to a screen shot

from our coursework. The cell in which our lead singer is trapped is an indexical signifier

of her being trapped metaphorically in some way. In our coursework, we challenged

Todorov’s narrative structure because the story line is non linear.

PropsThe MirrorIn Flyleaf’s “All Around Me” the lead singer is looking in to a mirror - this represents her struggle with

her self. We also used a mirror with negative words written on it to symbolise the singers internal

struggle with the words people have said to her. If we were using Vladmir Propp’s character functions

our lead singer would be the hero. But in our music video she is also the villain as she is her own

worst enemy. This is because our coursework is much more Art Cinema Narrative than Hollywood

narrative as it doesn't necessarily follow the typical convention.

In The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” music video, the lead

singer is denoted starting a fire under a railway tunnel,

this has connotations of rebellion and defiance. Fire is

also an iconic signifier of destruction and the end of an

era as well as rebirth or new beginnings. This is what it

symbolises in our coursework especially because our

lead singer is burning things that obviously have

meaning (clothes, photographs, a guitar).
