WALKABILITY includes

pedestrianization

Marta Potulska

Page 31: public space manual

#1 TREAT YOUR STREET AS A PUBLIC SPACE

Pedestrian zone in its entirety will become meeting places, nightlife zones and tourist

destinations. Function to move from one point to another will descend to the background. It

has to be designed that way.

Expenses: $Level of difficulty: *Involvement: municipality: 50%

inhabitants: 50%

Page 32: public space manual

#2 FIND APPROPRIATE STREET TO BEGIN

That is impossible to create a whole pedestrian zone at once. You have to do this in phases.

Start with one street, make it work, then think about next ones.

Expenses: -Level of difficulty: ***Involvement: municipality: 50%

inhabitants: 50%

Page 33: public space manual

#3 DO NOT GO FROM ONE EXTREME TO ANOTHER

You have much more options than to prohibit whole traffic. You can restrict vehicle access to emergency, you

can consider your street as a part-time pedestrian street, you can make shared space for vehicles and pedestrians.

Sometimes you can calm down the traffic and it will be just appropriate. You have to find the right way.
